The Summer Institute was designed for practicing teachers who need the courses for Certification or recent graduates who wish to add an endorsement.

ABOUT THE SUMMER INSTITUTE

The Summer Institute was designed for practicing teachers who need the courses for Certification or recent graduates who wish to add an endorsement.

Students submitting an application for the Summer Institute must apply to Tusculum College through the regular requirements, including a transcript. All students must have a 2.5 GPA, or they cannot be certified.

Each course will be completed in seven days. Students will attend classes for 6 hours a day and complete either 12 hours of practicum (if not already teaching) or a research project. The first day of class will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The remaining course times will be determined at the beginning of each class to suit the needs of the students, professor, and any needed practicum considerations.

Students may register for classes throughout the summer and take one course at a time. Students must have their transcripts reviewed by Carolyn Gregg to determine which courses are needed to complete the certification requirements.

Those who are not already enrolled at Tusculum College will have to apply through the Admission Office to establish a student profile. They must also establish a payment plan prior to the first day of class.

A special payment plan has been established for those taking more than one course. The courses will not follow the usual summer block system and will cost $1,600 per course. Financial aid will not be available for most students.

The TESOL Program has been approved by the state. We will be offering the first two courses needed for that Endorsement. The other four courses will be offered in later institutes.

The Gifted Endorsement will become available in Tennessee on Sept. 1, 2009.
