PIONEERS FALL TO 11TH IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL POLL

 

TUCSON, Ariz. --- The Tusculum baseball team dropped four spots and is tied for 11th in this week’s Collegiate Baseball Division II Coaches’ Poll. 

 

The Pioneers went 1-2 this past weekend in their season-opening series at then-No. 6 Mount Olive.  The Trojans (2-1) swept Saturday’s doubleheader by scores of 3-2 and 6-4.  In Sunday’s series finale, Tusculum erupted for five runs in the ninth inning in posting a 9-5 victory.

 

Defending national champion Tampa remains No. 1 after sweeping its season-opening twin-bill at Georgia College & State University.  Mesa State is No. 2, followed by Ouachita Baptist, Mount Olive and West Alabama.  Southern Indiana is sixth, while Delta State and CSU-Los Angeles are tied for seventh.  Franklin Pierce is ninth, following by 10th-ranked Grand Valley State. 

 

Tusculum and Angelo State are tied for 11th, followed by Abilene Christian, CSU-Chico, Montevallo, Emporia State, Armstrong Atlantic State, Minnesota State-Mankato, Florida Southern and North Georgia.

 

West Chester is 21st, followed by Georgia College, SIU Edwardsville, Francis Marion, Columbus State, Western Oregon, California (Pa.), Ashland, West Florida, USC Aiken and UC San Diego.

 

The Pioneers return to action this weekend when they play four games in three days in Kannapolis, N.C.  Tusculum will play the College of St. Rose on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by a non-conference tilt against Newberry at 6 p.m.  On Saturday, the Pioneers will have another non-league contest, when they face South Atlantic Conference rival Catawba at 6 p.m.  TC will close out their stay in Kannapolis on Sunday with a rematch against St. Rose at 11 a.m.
