TUSCULUM,
NEWBERRY BASEBALL GAME HALTED IN EIGHTH INNING
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Saturday’s Tusculum, Newberry baseball game
was halted in the top of the eighth inning with the score tied 3-3. Time and date for the resumption of the game
has yet to be determined. The fate of
the third game of the South Atlantic Conference series has also yet to be
determined.
Newberry jumped out to a 3-0
lead, plating two unearned runs in the second inning and another unearned tally
in the third. In the second inning, Thomas Berryhill
led off with a single and stole second. Casio Grider singled
to center but as Berryhill slowed at third. But on the play TC centerfielder Carlos Rivera slipped, allowing the Berryhill to score as Grider
moved to second. Grider
stole third and came across to score as the throw to third sailed into the
outfield.
In the third inning Jovan Rohena
tripled to center field and later scored on a passed ball as the Indians led
3-0.
Tusculum had a golden
opportunity to score in the fourth as the Pioneers loaded the bases, but
Newberry starter Chris Bremer got
out of the jam with a fly out.
In the fifth inning, Tusculum
got on the scoreboard when Christian
Rosa led off with a double, stole third and scored on a Carlos Rivera single. TC had a chance to move ahead as the Pioneers
loaded the bases with no outs. But once
again, Bremer got out of trouble with a line out and a pair of fly balls to
preserve the 3-1 lead.
The Pioneers knotted the game in
the sixth with a pair of runs as Brandon
Behenna led off with a base hit, moved to second
on an Aaron Hudgins bunt and scored
on Rosa’s RBI triple off the right field wall.
Rosa would score on Rivera’s sacrifice fly to tie the game.
Tusculum left the bases loaded
again in the bottom of the seventh. Dustin Morrow reached on a throwing
error to lead off the frame and Webb followed with a bunt single. Paul
Finger moved the runners up a base with his sacrifice bunt. Pinch hitter Sean Cotten drew a one-out walk to load
the bases, bringing in Newberry reliever Stephen
Byrd. Byrd was solid as he struck
out Behenna and got Hudgins to fly out to end the
threat.
The rains came at the end of the
seventh and the game was halted after a 1:45 rain delay.
