TUSCULUM BASEBALL MOVES UP TO SECOND IN NCBWA REGION POLL

WINTER PARK, Fla. --- The Tusculum College baseball team has jumped three spots and is ranked second in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Division II South Region Poll announced officials Monday.  Tusculum (38-12) went a perfect 5-0 last week, including four straight wins to capture the 2008 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title.

Defending national champion Tampa (34-7-1) holds onto the top spot in the region, receiving five first place votes.  Tusculum is second, while Catawba is third after posting a 5-2 record last, with both losses coming to the Pioneers, including a 4-2 setback in Sunday’s championship game in Hickory, N.C.  Carson-Newman and Lynn are tied for fourth, followed by Florida Tech, Nova Southeastern, Florida Southern, Barry and Stillman.

By virtue of winning the SAC Tournament, the Pioneers have earned an automatic berth to the NCAA II Tournament, which will be held next month.  Stillman has also punched its ticket for next month’s NCAA South Regional Tournament, winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament this past weekend.

The NCBWA South Region Poll is not used for selection purposes or seeding for the NCAA II Tournament.
