PIONEER WOMEN, UVA-WISE MEN WIN

TUSCULUM CROSS COUNTRY INVITATIONAL

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women and the men’s squad from University of Virginia’s College at Wise men’s claimed the team titles at the 2006 Tusculum Invitational, held Saturday morning at the Greene Valley Development Center.

The Tusculum women posted 15 points, led by invitational champion Alex Frary who posted a time of 21:10.3 on the 5,000-meter course. UVa-Wise claimed the men’s team crown with 27 points, edging out Hiwassee College by just two points.

In the women’s race, Tusculum boasted the top three runners, including Frary, Sarah Alston (21:40.2) and Alicja Dembna (22:08.1). UVa-Wise was led by Janice King (22:50.3) and Maureen Seibold (23:46.3), who finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the 8,000-meter men’s race, Hiwassee’s Eric Grubb won the individual title with a time of 28:17.2. Tusculum’s Winston Curry tallied a time of 28:37.9 to finish second, while Bryan Beason of Hiwassee finished third with 29:09.7. UVa-Wise’s top two runners were Sean Stiltner (29:12.2) and Stephen Gregory (29:39.8), placing fourth and fifth, respectively.

Tusculum will be in action this Friday when it travels to Hickory, N.C. to compete in the Lenoir-Rhyne College Invitational.
