TC WOMEN’S AND MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS

PLACE 20^TH AT FURMAN INVITATIONAL

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women’s and men’s cross country teams both finished 20^th at the Furman Invitational held Saturday at the Furman Golf Course. Both events featured a number of Division I participants, with Campbell University winning the women’s 5K race and Eastern Kentucky claiming victory in the men’s 8K run.

Freshman Alicja Dembna (Poznan, Poland) was the top finisher for the TC women, placing 83^rd out of 192 runners with a time of 21:37.98. Junior Sarah Alston (Morristown, Tenn.) crossed the finish line shortly thereafter, coming in 89^th with a time of 21:50.62. Jamie Dyke (Newport, Tenn.) completed the race with a time of 22:44.00, which ranked 120^th.

Junior Ashley King (Piney Flatts, Tenn.) recorded a 146^th-place finish with a time of 23:54.06, while sophomore Danielle Hutson (Kingsport, Tenn.) was 170^th with a time of 25:54.00.

For the Pioneer men’s squad, senior Ross Lewis (Morristown, Tenn.) was once again the team’s top finisher, crossing the line in a time of 29:04.90, which ranked 84^th out of 173 runners. A trio of freshman clocked the next three finishes for TC, led by Chris Haney (Denver, N.C.), who placed 135^th with a time of 31:14.15. Stephen Jones (Newport, Tenn.) tallied a 155^th-place finish with a time of 33:35.89, and Richard Neese was just behind Jones, placing 156^th with a time of 33:37.29.

Rounding out the field for the Pioneers were junior Scott Howard (Wakefield, Mass.; 170^th; 37:49.17), sophomore Thomas Whitley (Fayetteville, Ga.; 171^st; 37:56.09), and senior David Hileman (Castlewood, Va.; 173^rd; 44:38.00).

The Pioneer harriers are off until they host the South Atlantic Conference Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Greene Valley Developmental Center. The event is scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.
