PIONEERS PICKED FIFTH IN SAC FOOTBALL POLL

 

                SALISBURY, N.C. --- The Tusculum College football team is picked to finish fifth in the South Atlantic Conference according to the 2007 Preseason Coaches’ Poll released Friday at the league’s annual Media Day at the Holiday Inn in Salisbury, N.C.

 

                The Pioneers received 27 points in the poll of the seven head football coaches in the conference.

 

                Carson-Newman College is the preseason favorite claiming 44 points and three first place votes.  Defending league champion Newberry College is picked second with 43 points and four first place tallies.  The Indians are ranked 13th in the national Division II preseason poll by Street & Smith College Football Yearbook and 17th by Lindy's College Football Magazine.  Wingate University is picked third with 30 points, followed by Catawba College (29), Tusculum, Mars Hill College (15) and Lenoir-Rhyne College (8).

                                         

                Tusculum posted a 6-5 record in 2006 and finished tied for fifth place in the SAC with a 3-4 league worksheet.

 

                Tusculum opens the 2007 gridiron campaign on Saturday, Aug. 25 when the Pioneers travel to the University of Charleston (W.Va.) for a 1 p.m. contest.
