CHASE CARROLL WINS SAC CHAMPIONSHIP CROWN,

PIONEERS FINISH SECOND WITH STRONG FINAL ROUND

HICKORY, N.C. --- Tusculum College’s Chase Carroll fired an even-par 144 to capture medalist honors at the 2007 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men’s Golf Championship, held Tuesday at Lake Hickory Country Club at Catawba Springs. The Pioneers carded 308-296=604 to finish in second place, 11 shots behind SAC Champion Presbyterian College.

Carroll, a sophomore from Knoxville, Tenn., fired a 74 in his opening round on Tuesday, and followed with a two-under 70 for his second 18 holes to win the tournament by one shot over Presbyterian’s Ben Karns (74-71) and two over Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kyle Shelvin (77-69=146). Tusculum teammate Chris Wynne (Johnson City, Tenn.) joined Carroll on the SAC All-Tournament team with 75-73=148 to finish fourth.

Carson-Newman and Lenoir-Rhyne finished third with 609, while Newberry placed fifth at 613. Wingate finished sixth with 616, followed by Catawba (620), Lincoln Memorial (625) and Mars Hill (633).

Tusculum’s Matt McIntyre and Jake Scheffers tied for 34^th place with 159, while Matt Brown tied for 37^th with 160. This marks the first time a Tusculum player has ever won this tournament. For Carroll, this is his second medalist honor this season as he captured the Tusculum Fall Classic crown in October.

The two-day, 54-hole championship was shortened to 36-holes on Tuesday due to dangerous wind conditions on Monday.
