ROLLINS WINS TUSCULUM/KIAWAH ISLAND INTERCOLLEGIATE IN PLAYOFF

 

            KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- Third-ranked Rollins College shot a final round 290 and won the team title on a playoff at the 2007 Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at Cougar Point Golf Course.  The Tars finished with 306-290=596 to tie top-ranked Florida Southern College, who posted 305-291=596 over the 36-hole tournament.

 

            The tournament title was decided on a tie-breaker using the lowest score of each team's fifth player.  Rollins' Cristina Gugier posted 85-78=163, two shots better than Mocs' fifth player.

 

            Rollins' Marie-Pierre Bernier won medalist honors as she fired a final round five-under par 67 to shoot 75-67=142 (-2), edging out Kim Ulander of Florida Southern, who posted 74-69=143 (-1) on Sunday.  Bernier established three tournament records, including lowest round (67), lowest second round score (67) and low 36-hole total (142).

 

            Joining Bernier and Ulander on the All-Tournament team are Florida Southern's Lindsey Bergeon (71-73=144), Pfeiffer University's Brittany Beltran (75-73=148) and Laura Fourdraine (76-74=150) of Rollins.  Fourdraine was in a three-way tie for fifth place, but earned All-Tournament status via scorecard playoff, including back-to-back birdies.

 

            Defending Intercollegiate champion Nova Southeastern University finished third with 609, six shots better than last year's winning tally.  Newberry College finished fourth with 645, while Berry College rounded out the top five with 647.  Wingate University placed sixth with 649, followed by USC Upstate (650), Pfeiffer (656), host Tusculum (658), Belmont Abbey College (667), Lenoir-Rhyne College (686), Mt. Olive College (703), Queens University of Charlotte (713), Lincoln Memorial University (719), St. Andrews Presbyterian College (752), Limestone College (769) and The Citadel (800).

 

            Rollins's Sunday round of 290 was the lowest team score in the five-year history of the event as was tournament total 596 by both the Tars and Florida Southern.

 

            Tusculum knocked 16 shots off its opening round score with its final round 321.  Amanda Bowen finished 19th with 78-79=157, while TC teammate Shannon Palenkas placed 20th with 82-77=159.  Becca Friddle tied for 37th with 87-81=168, while rookie Mary Ann Vizcarrondo shot 90-84=174 to tie for 51st.  Susanne Sisco tallied 94-92=186 to finish 69th.  Mandy Hartsock, playing as an individual, placed 68th with 89-95=184 over the two-day tournament.
