PIONEER MEN, WOMEN LEAD AFTER FIRST DAY OF TUSCULUM FALL CLASSIC

                GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Pioneer men and women's golf teams each established school records to fire a combined 593 after first round action of the inaugural Tusculum College Fall Classic, held this week at Link Hills Country Club.  Teams are competing in tournaments both in the men and women's divisions.  Six colleges and universities are also vying for the combined team championship.

 

                The Tusculum men posted a school-record 283 (-1), led by sophomore Chase Carroll who tallied a career-best four-under par 67.  The TC women's squad broke the school record by five shots with its opening round 310.  Senior Shannon Palenkas led the charge with a one-under par 71, the second lowest 18-hole score in school history.

 

                Tusculum leads the men's tournament by nine shots over second place St. Andrews Presbyterian College with 292.  Wingate University is third with 294, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne College (295), Mars Hill College (297), Walters State College (298), Brevard College (301), Lincoln Memorial University (303) and the University of Virginia's College at Wise (303).

 

                In the women's event, the host Pioneers have a 14-shot advantage over Catawba College (324).  Wingate is third with 327, followed by Lincoln Memorial (333), Lenoir-Rhyne (334), St. Andrews (353), Mars Hill (360), UNC Pembroke (363) and Presbyterian College (378).

 

                In the men and women's combined tournament, Tusculum leads with 593, followed by Wingate (294-327=621), Lenoir-Rhyne (295-334=629), Lincoln Memorial (303-333=636), St. Andrews (292-353=645) and Mars Hill (297-360=657).

 

                Carroll was one of seven players on Monday to shoot even par or better.  He holds a one-shot lead over teammate Matt Brown, who posted a three-under par 68, playing as an individual competitor.  The St. Andrews' duo of Alvin Young and Matt Doyle posted rounds of 70 and are tied for third place with Garrett Davitt of Wingate.  Tusculum's Jacob Scheffers shot 71, along with fellow Pioneer Matt McIntyre (playing as an individual) to tie for sixth place.

 

                Palenkas leads the women's tournament by four strokes over Christina Crovetti of UNC Pembroke, who fired a first-round 75.  Tusculum's Amanda Bowen and Alessandra Maurtua of St. Andrews are tied for third with 76.  Wingate's Beth Kirkham rounds out the top five with 77.

 

                The final rounds will be played on Tuesday at Link Hills Country Club
