TC DEFEATS SALEM INTERNATIONAL 3-1 IN OPENER

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The No. 6 Tusculum College men’s soccer team opened its season with a 3-1 victory over Salem International Friday at Pioneer Field. (Box Score)

The Pioneers controlled the tempo for much of the match and out-shot the Tigers 18-9.   TC scored all three of its goals in the first half.

Tusculum’s first goal came in the 14th minute when Tony Prisco (Woodbridge, Va.) drilled a direct shot from 15 yards out off an assist from Johann Contaste (Santa Cruz, Trinidad).  The Pioneers added another goal when Justin VanMatre (St. Louis, Mo.) drove a shot past the outstretched arms of SIU goalkeeper Daniel Carr (London, England) in the 32nd minute.  Contaste also made the assist on the second goal.

The final goal of the half, which ultimately proved to be the Pioneers’ last of the match, came as time was winding down in period.  Jeremy Partin (Germantown, Ohio) launched a laser pass down field to Malick Jobe (Stockholm, Sweden) who scored the breakaway goal with just 12 seconds remaining before intermission.

Salem International made its way onto the scoreboard in the 76th minute of play when Milan Rakic (Belgrade, Serbia) nailed a free kick past Pioneer keeper J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario).  The goal proved to be the only tally of the evening for the Tigers.

Tusculum will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 4, when it faces Alderson-Broaddus at 2:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
