VANMATRE GOAL GIVES TC 2-1 OT VICTORY OVER ALDERSON-BROADDUS

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. ---  Gerald Watt (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) found Justin VanMatre (St. Louis, Mo.) who headed in a goal from 12 yards out six minutes into overtime to give the No. 6 Tusculum College men’s soccer a 2-1 victory over Alderson-Broaddus on Sunday at Pioneer Field. (Box Score)

Tusculum (2-0) had a number of opportunities to find the back of the net throughout the match, firing eight shots on goal, many of which came tantalizingly close to scoring.  In total, TC out-shot Alderson-Broaddus (1-2) by a 25-13 margin.

The Pioneers scored first in the 35th minute when Malick Jobe (Stockholm, Sweden) drove in his second goal of the season off an assist from Damion Scott (Brampton, Ontario, Canada).

The Battlers knotted the score in the 65th minute.  With A-BC’s Eric Belcher (Edgewood, Md.) attacking, TC goalkeeper J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) dashed to the top of the penalty box to fall on the ball.  Nevertheless, the ball escaped Swaminathan’s clutches, and Belcher took advantage of the situation, driving in an uncontested shot to tie the match.

Neither team managed a goal for the remainder of the regulation period, and in the 96th minute, VanMatre’s overtime header gave the Pioneers the win.

TC took 13 corner kicks in the match, compared to three for the Battlers.

Tusculum will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 9, when the University of Charleston (W. Va.) rolls into Greeneville.  Kick off for the match will be at 6:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
