No. 6 TUSCULUM DEFEATS WINGATE 4-1

 
        Wingate, N.C.----
Tusculum College freshman forward Dave Bailey (Bristol, England) scored three goals to push the Pioneers (7-1-1, 3-0-1 SAC) past Wingate University (6-7, 1-2 SAC) 4-1 in a South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer match Saturday afternoon at the Wingate University soccer facility. Tusculum is the number six team in this week’s NSCAA/adidas Division II top 25 poll. (Box Score)

        In the first half, Bailey broke the scoreless tie on a one-touch shot from a Steve Dolbeer (Jonesboro, Ga.) cross in the 28th minute. Pioneer senior midfielder Gerald Watt (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) then added a goal for the Pioneers at the 32:36 mark. Watt’s free kick shot hit the crossbar and bounced into the net.
 
        Wingate sophomore midfielder/forward James Lavery (Belfast, Northern Ireland) answered for the Bulldogs with a penalty kick in the 42nd minute. Tusculum led 2-1 at halftime.
 
        In the second half, Bailey started things quickly, netting a shot in the 45th minute of play. In the 69th minute, Bailey concluded the scoring on a breakaway. TC sophomore midfielder/defender Damion Scott (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) assisted Bailey on his third goal.
 
        Wingate senior goalkeeper Dustin Prickett (Lakeland, Fla.) had five saves for the Bulldogs. Tusculum junior netminder J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) had three saves for the Pioneers. Both Prickett and Swaminathan went the distance in the nets.
 
        Wingate will host St. Andrews Presbyterian College on Wednesday, October 12 at 4 p.m. Tusculum will stay in the league fray, hosting No. 20 Carson-Newman College in a SAC battle on Wednesday, October 5 at 7 p.m.
