NO. 7 CARSON-NEWMAN SHUTS OUT NO. 12 TUSCULUM 3-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The No. 7 Carson-Newman men’s soccer team used a balanced offensive attack and a solid defensive effort to post a 3-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over No. 12 Tusculum on Wednesday at Pioneer Field.  With the victory, the Eagles improve to 9-1-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the SAC, while the Pioneers slip to 7-2-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the conference. (Box Score)

Carson-Newman has now won 15 consecutive SAC regular-season matches, with its last league loss coming on Oct. 8, 2003, to Tusculum at Pioneer Field.

The shot totals accumulated by the squads were virtually identical, as TC recorded 18 shots and C-N  fired 17.  Nevertheless, the Pioneers could not convert their opportunities, and Eagle goalkeeper Tyler Baldock (Surrey, British Columbia) made six saves, a number of them spectacular, to preserve the shutout for his squad.

Jussi Wooler (Winchester, England) put the Eagles on the board in the 16th minute when he took a one-touch pass from Brandon Collins (Davie, Fla.) and nailed a shot from the left wing.

C-N added its second goal in the 29th minute, as Dario Carrasco (Andalucia Malaga, Spain) arched a shot just over the head of TC keeper J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) from about 10 yards out.

Carson-Newman sealed its victory in the 79th minute.  An attacking Carrasco took a shot that drew Swaminathan away from the net, and consequently, was stopped by a Pioneer defender.  Moments later, as Swaminathan attempted to clear the ball to the Pioneer end of the pitch, C-N’s Brad Cobbs (Rocky Mount, Va.) intercepted the kick, gained control of the ball, and launched a missile that found the upper right corner of the net from about 30 yards out.

Swaminathan concluded the match with three saves for the Pioneers.

Tusculum will next embark on a string of three road matches, beginning with a SAC showdown at Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 12.  The contest is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.  Carson-Newman will host Catawba on Oct. 8, with a 2:00 p.m. kick-off schedule in Jefferson City.
