NO. 8 TUSCULUM FENDS OFF BARRY 3-2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.The Barry men’s soccer team fell 3-2 to the eighth-ranked Tusculum Pioneers on Sunday at Buccaneer Field. (Box Score)

The game was a scoreless draw for the first 45 minutes, but the two offenses exploded for five goals in the second half.

Tusculum’s Benyam Kefleyessus (Minneapolis, Minn.) broke the scoring ice in the 54th minute. Matt Ross (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) sent a cross from the left side, and Kefleyessus gathered it in at the top of the Barry six-yard box and slipped a shot past Ido Langer in goal.

Less than a minute later, Stefan Tangen evened the score for the Bucs (8-5-1). After a scramble in the box, a TC defender attempted to clear the ball, but Tangen intercepted the pass and blasted a low shot just inside the near post.

But the Pioneers (9-3-1) pushed across two goals in the 69th and 74th minute. Gerald Watt (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) scored on a similar play to Tangen’s goal, and then five minutes later, assisted Dave Bailey (Bristol, England) on the eventual game-winner.

Mike Mikulin scored a rebound goal off a Mirza Halilbasic shot in the 76th minute, but that was a close as the Bucs would get.

J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) made seven saves for Tusculum. Chris Rich played the first half for the Bucs without facing a shot, while Ido Langer made two saves in the second half.

The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 19, when they host Catawba in their final regular season home contest of the season.  Match time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
