HARRIS' GOAL IN EXTRA TIME LIFTS No. 12 PIONEERS
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Jay Harris' (London, England) goal in the 104th minute broke a 1-1 tie as the 12th-ranked Pioneers came away with a 2-1 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan University Friday evening at Pioneer Field. (Box Score)
TC outshot the Bobcats 37-5 and had 17 corner kicks compared to none for WVWU.
West Virginia Wesleyan had just one shot in the first 40 minutes, but made it count. Senior Steven Fielding (Brighton, England) converted a breakaway off a deflection at 25:33 to put the Bobcats up one.
Tusculum evened the score with just under four minutes to play in the first half. Junior Gerald Watt (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) tallied his seventh of the season at the 41:10 mark for a 1-1 score at halftime.
The teams battled for the entire second half and the first overtime without a score, setting the stage for Harris. The senior received a pass from senior Jonathan Gordon (Glasgow, Scotland) and took a shot that deflected off a WVWU player, out of reach of the Bobcat goalkeeper.
Sophomore J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) was not called upon to make a save, but allowed just the one goal in 104 minutes. His counterpart, freshman George Rowley (New Orleans, La.), made 10 saves.
Tusculum (10-2-1) takes a day off before hosting Davis and Elkins College Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. West Virginia Wesleyan (4-8-3) makes the short trip to Jefferson City, Tenn. to take on third-ranked Carson-Newman College Sunday at 1 p.m.
