HOPKINS SETS SAC CAREER POINT RECORD IN WIN
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College senior Paul Hopkins (Portsmouth, England) scored a goal and an assist, setting the South Atlantic Conference career point mark with 172 in the 12th-ranked Pioneers' 4-1 win over Davis and Elkins College Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. (Box Score)
Hopkins breaks the record of 170 set by Mars Hill's Andy Thompson (1996-99) and Majid Bakhtiari (1985-89). His goal ties the SAC career goal record of 73 held by Thompson.
Hopkins tied the point record in the fifth minute assisting on junior Gerald Watt's (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) goal. Watt took Hopkins' cross and one-timed it into the open net. Hopkins set the mark at the 23:56 mark, putting home a loose ball in front of the goal
The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break when sophomore Ryan Butler (Herts, England) converted a D&E turnover into his first career goal.
Neither team scored in the first 30 minutes of the final period until junior Carl Scowcroft (Williamstown, N.J.) stole the ball from the feet of the TC netminder to make the score 3-1. Tusculum freshman Tony Prisco (Woodbridge, Va.) tallied his first career goal with less than two minutes to play in the match.
Sophomore J.P. Swaminathan (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) and senior Cameron Bailey (Winchester, Tenn.) each played a half in the net, combining for one save and one goal allowed. The Senators' Ben Royce (Elm Grove, Wisc.) made 13 saves.
Tusculum (11-2-1) travels to Harrogate, Tenn. Wednesday to take on area rival Lincoln Memorial University, ranked No. 5 in the South Region with an 11-1-0 record. Davis and Elkins (6-8-2) hosts Columbia Union College Tuesday afternoon.
