Coach Gillum has assembled a
talented group of 10 newcomers who will be looked to mature quickly and
contribute immediately. The Pioneers
showed that in the fall as Tusculum posted some big wins, but none bigger than
seventh-inning come-from-behind win over NCAA Division I Regional finalist
Tennessee Tech.
Taylor MacDonald, a freshman outfielder from Toronto, Ontario,
Canada, is slated to be the starting shortstop on opening day. Another rookie expected start in infield is
first baseman Shanda Kimbrough. Kimbrough was a two-time All-Conference
standout at Morristown West High School as the Trojans won the region title.
Another East Tennessee product earning
a start in her inaugural collegiate campaign is Jefferson City native Jennifer Turley. Turley, a Jefferson County High School
graduate, is slated to be in left field on opening day.
Freshman Ashley Whitehead is expected to be in the starting rotation for the
TC pitching staff. Whitehead, who split
her prep playing career at Jefferson County and Morristown West, was a two-time
All-Conference and All-District honoree in the circle.
Alex Kimbrell, an outfielder from
Crossville, Tenn., was a two-time All-District selection at Cumberland County
High School. Kimbrell
batted .560 last season, as Cumberland County won the
third of three straight District titles.
Lesli Huerta, a native of Van Vleck, Texas,
will be looking to contribute in the outfield.
Huerta, younger sister of teammate Holli Cadenhead, earned All-State, All-District and All-County recognition
at Van Vleck High School.
Samantha Cole, a catcher from Sevierville, Tenn., starred on the
softball diamond at Pigeon Forge High School.
While at Pigeon Forge, she led her team to four District championships
and a 2007 runner-up finish in the region.
Katy Footitt, a rookie infielder from LaVergne, Tenn., comes to Tusculum after a solid prep
career at LaVergne High School. Footitt garnered
All-District and All-Mid-State honors twice.
Morganton, N.C. infielder Jessica McKee, is slated to see action at third
base, behind Johnson. The Freedom High
School product was a two-time All-State selection and a four-time
All-Conference pick. McKee was also
named a “Top 10 Player to Watch” by the Charlotte
Observer.
Kristina Neal, an infielder from Auburn, Ga., was a three-year letterwinner at Dacula High
School. She led her team to the
Sectionals three times, including 2006 as Dacula won
the Region crown.
The Pioneers will face Seton Hill
(1 p.m.) and Montreat (5 p.m.) on Saturday to close
out the Classic. Games begin at 11 a.m.
on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
