AASU SOFTBALL SWEEPS TUSCULUM

 

SAVANNAH, Ga. --- Natalie Vogler's three-run walk-off homer to left field in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two gave the Armstrong Atlantic State softball squad the doubleheader sweep of Tusculum College on Saturday afternoon at Pirate Softball Field. AASU won the opener 7-3 and captured the second game 5-2.

 

The Pioneers (8-5) got on the board first with an RBI double from sophomore Makenzie Loy in the top of the first inning.  AASU (8-2) answered back in the bottom of the fourth with homer from senior Vanessa Becerra.

 

The Pirates tied the game 2-2 with an RBI double from sophomore Jessica Strong in the bottom of the sixth inning. Armstrong Atlantic then put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman Tori Richter reached on an error and advanced to second on a single off the bat of junior Kari Marsico. Vogler then tagged the ball over the left field fence for her first home run of the season and the 5-2, victory.

 

Holli Cadenhead hurled seven innings giving up 12 hits and five runs, while striking out two in the loss for Tusculum. Courtney Tucker (1-0) hurled seven innings giving up seven hits, two runs and striking out seven to claim the victory for the Pirates in game two.

 

In the first game, the Pirates busted out two runs in the second inning, two in the third inning and two in the fourth inning to cruise to the 7-3 win. Amanda Vickers put AASU on the scoreboard first with a two run shot to right field in the bottom of the second, while Nicole Huddleston added a two run homer of her own in the bottom of the third to eventually give Armstrong Atlantic State the win.

 

Freshman Jessica Waters (4-2) earned the win in the first game, hurling six innings and giving up five hits, three runs and striking out five while sophomore Pam Bykowski picked up her first save of the season in relief for Waters in game one. Senior Megan DuBois picked up the loss for the Pioneers in game one, hurling five innings giving up eight hits and seven runs while striking out six.
