GARDNER-WEBB USES DOUBLES PLAY TO DOWN MEN'S TENNIS
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Bulldogs got strong play out of the middle of their lineup as they posted a win over Tusculum College at the Gardner-Webb Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Gardner-Webb got wins from Kern Phillip, Kim Ellis and Daniel Abrahão in the No. 3, 4 and 5 singles matches to force a 3-3 tie heading into doubles play against the Tusculum Pioneers.
Phillip and Abrahão then teamed at No. 2 doubles to post a 9-7 win over TC’s duo of Roberto Robles and Jesse Puckerin to counter Tusculum’s 8-5 win at No. 3.
With the outcome of the match hanging in the balance and riding on the outcome of the No. 1 doubles match, GWU’s top pair of Taylor Ferrier and Ellis rallied from an early deficit to force a tiebreaker with Sergio Espinosa and Carlos Garcia of Tusculum. Ferrier and Ellis jumped to the quick 2-0 lead in the tiebreaker before seeing Espinosa and Garcia rally to take the 3-2 edge with the serve. Gardner-Webb’s tandem would not be denied however, surging to score the final five points for the 7-3 win and giving Gardner-Webb a 4-3 match win in thrilling fashion.
