TUSCULUM MEN'S TENNIS BEATS EAGLES 6-3

 

                JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. --- The No. 37 Tusculum College men's tennis team swept doubles play and got the clinching point by newcomer Nic Janssen at No. 6 singles as the Pioneers defeated Carson-Newman College 6-3 in the South Atlantic Conference opener for both teams.

 

                The Pioneers improve to 8-4 overall (1-0 SAC), while the Eagles fall to 5-2, 0-1 SAC.

 

                All three doubles points were highly contested including the No. 2 and No. 3 flights which were decided by identical 8-6 scores.  Antonio Oliver and Leo Guaycurus defeated the C-N pair of Ricardo Gutierrez and Travis Banguess at No. 2 doubles, while Pedro Galavis and Julien Jacob beat Giuseppe Schwarz in the No. 3 flight.

 

                Singles play was even more exciting as three of the six matches went three sets.

 

                Oliver won a three-set battle over Schwarz at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4, while Janssen won the fifth and deciding point by defeating Banguess 6-2, 6-3.

 

                Carson-Newman won the top two singles matches as Gutierrez defeated Galavis 6-4, 6-2.  C-N's Rafael Soares knocked off the reigning SAC Player of the Week Sergio Espinosa 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 in a three-set thriller.

 

                Preston Sneed of Carson-Newman also rallied from a set down to defeat Jacob 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5 singles.

 

                Tusculum is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Catawba College for an 11 a.m. match at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
