NO. 37 TUSCULUM DOWNS WINGATE 9-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – No. 37 Tusculum claimed a 9-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Wingate on Sunday at Nichols Tennis Complex. With its fourth consecutive win, Tusculum improves to 9-4 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Wingate falls to 3-7 and 0-2 in the league.

TC’s No. 1 tandem of Carlos Garcia (Caracas, Venezuela) and Sergio Espinosa (Caracas, Venezuela) led the Pioneers in doubles play, taking an 8-0 win against WU’s Joe Kanekar (Pure, India) and Christoph Voelkel (Buchholz, Germany).

Antonio Oliver (Madrid, Spain) and Leo Guaycurus (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) defeated Jose Valarezo (Ecuador) and Felipe Fidalgo (Gastonia, N.C.) 8-3 at the No. 2 slot, while Pedro Galavis (Caracas, Venezuela) and Julien Jacob (Vancouver, British Columbia) held off Brandon Thornton (Richmond, Va.) and Mark Stern (Gainesville, Fla.) for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Jacob did not surrender a single set en route to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fidalgo. Both Galavis and Oliver were 6-1, 6-4 winners for the Pioneers, with Galavis downing Kanekar at the No. 1 slot and Oliver earning victory over Voelkel at the No. 3 position.

Garcia surrendered just one set to Valarezo, taking a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles. Espinosa saw his No. 2 match against Thornton retired with the score 6-3, 4-1, and Nic Janssen (Montreal, Quebec) picked up a win via forfeit in the No. 6 position.

Tusculum will next be in action on Wednesday when it hosts Mars Hill for a 2:30 p.m. match. Wingate will host Newberry on Wednesday at 2:30.
