TUSCULUM'S SERGIO ESPINOSA NAMED SAC MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

 

Sergio Espinosa                ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Sergio Espinosa of Tusculum College has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week announced league officials Tuesday.

 

Espinosa, a 5-10, 145-pound junior from Caracas, Venezuela, went 3-0 in singles and doubles last week as the No. 39 Pioneers went 2-1.  Tusculum posted South Atlantic Conference wins over Mars Hill (No. 9 in NCAA Southeast Region) and Newberry.  TC's only setback was a 5-3 decision to No. 24 Anderson University.

 

Espinosa opened the week with a No. 1 singles win over Mars Hill's Francisco Contreras.  He followed that with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Anderson's Andres Weisskopf.  In the Anderson match, Espinosa and No. 1 doubles partner Carlos Garcia posted an 8-6 upset of Srikrishna Ramanathan and Renato Assuncao, who are ranked No. 9 in the doubles play in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region.

 

Espinosa wrapped up the week with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Newberry's Maxim Sukharev.

 

                The SAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week is selected by a vote of the league's eight sports information directors.
