GUAYCURUS WINS TWO TITLES AT USC UPSTATE TOURNAMENT

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --- Tusculum College’s Leo Guaycurus won the Men’s Singles C Draw and partnered with Henrique Rodrigues to capture the Men’s Doubles B Draw title at the 2006 USC Upstate Fall Tennis Tournament, held this weekend in Spartanburg.

The Pioneers competed in individual matches against players representing USC Upstate, Wofford College, Gardner-Webb University, Furman University, USC Aiken, Mars Hill College, and Presbyterian College.

Guaycurus went 4-0 in singles play over the weekend, while also going 3-0 in doubles competition with Rodrigues.

After defeating Robert Roddy of Mars Hill, Guaycurus rallied from a set down to defeat USC Aiken's Christopher Kaetz 2-6, 6-4 (11-9). He would face another USCA foe in the bracket finals as he defeated Brandon Hebbard 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets.

At B Doubles competition, Guaycurus and Rodrigues defeated Ryan Bernthal and Taylor Ferrier of Gardner-Webb 9-8 (1). The TC pair followed with an 8-4 pro set win over Richard Cahi and McElveen of Wofford in the semifinals. The duo would go on to defeat Michael Nicol and Brad Luciuk of Presbyterian, 8-6 in the championship.

Also in C singles, Julien Jacob advanced to the bracket semifinals as he posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Presbyterian's Mark Cannatelli and a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Ryan Bernthal of Gardner-Webb. Hebbard defeated Jacob in a 6-2, 4-6 (10-7) battle in the semis.

Carlos Garcia and Hunter Beal also posted 1-1 singles records on the weekend.

The Tusculum men's squad will host Johnson C. Smith University for a match at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
