RODRIGUES WINS BRACKET AT ETSU TENNIS INVITATIONAL

 

            JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- Tusculum College sophomore Henrique Rodrigues posted a perfect 3-0 record to win his bracket at last weekend's ETSU Tennis Fall Invitational.

 

            Rodrigues won the Red Bracket as he posted wins over Taylan Batuk (Mars Hill), James Crawford (Tennessee Tech) and Andrew Lee (Presbyterian).

 

            Junior Leo Guaycurus advanced to the finals of the Brown Bracket as he went 2-1 during the weekend in singles play.  Guaycurus opened with a 6-2, 6-2 win over James Bennett (Tennessee Tech) and followed with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 win over ETSU's Drew Kiser.  Guaycurus lost in the finals 6-3, 6-3 to Presbyterian's Henry Walker.

 

            Senior Carlos Garcia went 2-1 on the weekend as he was eliminated in the Blue Bracket final.  Garcia defeated Cumberland's Oscar Pantoja (7-6, 6-4) and Matt Martin of Presbyterian (6-2, 6-2), before falling to PC's Michael Nicol 4-6, 6-3, 2-0 ret.

 

            Senior Sergio Espinosa won a three-set marathon in his opening match 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 against Lloyd Harris (Tennessee Tech) in the Orange Bracket.  Espinosa played in his second straight three-setter as he fell 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to Patrick Fediuk (Presbyterian).  In his consolation match, Espinosa won 6-4, 6-4 over PC's Ruan Oliver.

 

            TC newcomer Jason Milhorn went 2-1 in the Yellow Bracket during the weekend as he captured his opening match with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Milligan's Jonathan Tuttle.  Adam Herendeen (Presbyterian) knocked Milhorn to the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-4 decision.  Milhorn bounced back with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniel Robinson (Virginia-Wise).

 

            Sophomore Nic Bigler went 2-1 in the Golf Bracket, rookie Steven Laub went 1-2 in the Green Bracket, while Hunter Beal posted a 0-3 worksheet in the Red Bracket.

 

            Tusculum had four doubles teams compete during the weekend as well.  The team of Guaycurus and Rodrigues went 2-1 in the Blue Bracket, including an 8-6 pro set win over the TC team of Garcia and Espinosa (1-2 record over the weekend).

 

            The TC pairing of Laub and Milhorn went 1-2 in the Orange Bracket, while Bigler and Beal also went 1-2 in the Gold Bracket.

 

            Tusculum will travel to Johnson C. Smith University next Saturday (Oct. 6) for a 1 p.m. match.
