MARIA NEVAREZ SETS CAREER WINS MARK,

TUSCULUM WOMEN'S TENNIS BEATS MARS HILL 8-1

Maria Nevarez established a new school record with her 65th career win Wednesday vs. Mars Hill

            GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College senior Maria Nevarez recorded her 65th career singles win on Wednesday as the 38th-ranked Pioneers defeated Mars Hill College 8-1 in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action at the Roger M. Nichols Tennis Complex. 

 

Tusculum wins its sixth consecutive match to improve to 10-5 overall and 3-0 in league play.  Mars Hill falls to 10-4, 1-2 in SAC.

                Nevarez, who have tallied a 65-7 career slate, passes former teammate and four-time SAC Player of the Year Lesley Murray, who posted a 64-2 singles record from 2000-04.  Nevarez also improved her career SAC record to 18-0, matching Murray's four-year league tally.

 

                The Pioneers won two of the three doubles points, including an 8-3 pro set win at No. 1 singles by Nevarez and Claudia Bolivar over Nancie Gruber and Whitney Stroud.

 

                The Lady Lions captured a point at No. 2 doubles as Jenny Rogers and Maranda Dellinger posted an 8-5 win over Bronwyn Hartley and Amanda Pike.

               

                Tusculum swept all six singles points, including Nevarez who won in straight sets (6-0, 6-0 over Stroud at the No. 3 flight.  TC also got singles points by Bolivar, Danae Valderrama, Hartley, Pike and Jennifer Sparks.

 

                The Pioneers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Newberry College for a 1 p.m. match.  Mars Hill will also be on the road Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest at Catawba College.
