NEWBERRY WOMEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS TUSCULUM 6-3

 

                GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry College captured two of the three doubles points en route to a 6-3 road victory at Tusculum College Saturday afternoon in South Atlantic Conference women's tennis action.

 

                Newberry (7-5, 4-1 SAC) posted victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, including an 8-1 decision by Autise Mortimer and Lauren Hartley at the top flight.  The Tusculum duo of Danae Valderrama and Samantha Cantu cut the deficit to 2-1 with their 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles.

 

                Valderrama captured another point for the Pioneers (11-4, 4-2 SAC) at No. 1 singles with her 6-1, 7-5 win over Mortimer.  But Hartley and Isabel Kreidler answered with two critical points at the second and third flight.  Hartley defeated Tusculum's Jennifer Sparks 6-3, 7-5 at No. 2 singles, while Kreidler posted a 6-0, 6-3 win against Cantu at the third flight.

 

                Tanea Miller sealed the win with her victory at No. 4 singles, while Bethany Poppe answered with a three-set win at No. 6 over Caroline Crowe.

 

                Tusculum returns to action on Sunday when it hosts No. 27 Presbyterian College for a 1 p.m. contest at the Nichols Tennis Complex.  Newberry will host Florida Tech on Thursday at 2 p.m.
