TUSCULUM DEFEATS WINGATE 5-0,

ADVANCES TO SAC TOURNAMENT SEMIS

GREENEVILLE, Tenn.The second-seeded Tusculum women’s tennis team defeated seventh-seeded Wingate 5-0 on Wednesday at the Nichols Tennis Complex to advance to the semifinals of the 2006 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament.

 

The victory improves Tusculum to 16-6 on the season, while Wingate concludes its campaign with a 6-15 mark.

 

                The Pioneers swept three doubles matches.  Tusculum’s Maria Nevarez downed Cameron Curlee 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 3 singles position, and Jennifer Sparks closed the victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Brittany Ruffner in the No. 6 slot.

 

                In doubles action, Claudia Bolivar and Nevarez posted an 8-2 win against Alexis McDaniel and Sydney Pallesen at the No. 1 flight.  Bronwyn Hartley and Amanda Pike teamed for an 8-3 No. 2 doubles decision against Curlee and Erika Gluckstal.  In the No. 3 position, Danae Valderrama and Sparks downed Shawn Kindley and Ashley Keefer 8-6.

 

                Tusculum will face the winner of the match between third-seeded Catawba and sixth-seeded Newberry on Saturday at 9 a.m.  The semifinal and final rounds of the Food Lion SAC Tournament will be hosted by Carson-Newman in Jefferson City, Tenn.
