WOMEN’S TENNIS ENDS YEAR RANKED 27TH
SKILLMAN, N.J. --- The Tusculum College women’s tennis team has
ended the season ranked No. 27 in the nation according to the final 2007-08
Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Top 40 announced officials. The No. 27 ranking is the second best end of
the year ranking for the Pioneers. The
2003-04 squad posted a 20-1 mark and earned a No. 22 ranking.
The Pioneers tallied a 20-4
worksheet this year, winning nine of their last 10 matches, including three in
a row to capture the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament title, the program’s second in school history. Tusculum’s 20 wins matched the school record
set by the 2003-04 team.
Armstrong Atlantic State
finished the year No. 1 after claiming its fourth national championship last
month with a 5-1 win over Lynn. BYU
Hawaii is second in the poll, followed by Lynn, Valdosta State, Francis Marion,
West Florida, Barry, Abilene Christian, California (Pa.) and Rollins. Three of Tusculum’s four losses this year
came against teams in the top 10 (Francis Marion, California, Rollins).
Columbus State is 11th,
followed by Clayton State, Florida Southern, Hawaii Pacific, Nova Southeastern,
Northwood, Incarnate Word, Drury, Georgia College & State, Delta State,
Tarleton State, Hawaii Hilo, Northeastern State, UC San Diego, Augusta State,
Grand Valley State, Tusculum, Erskine, Slippery Rock, East Central, Northwest
Missouri State, Saint Leo, Cameron, Southwest Baptist, Cal Poly Pomona, USC
Aiken, CSU Los Angeles, Limestone, North Alabama and Central Oklahoma.
The 20-4 record also marked the
eighth straight winning season for the Pioneers and the sixth NCAA II
Tournament appearance in the last eight years.
The national ranking is also Tusculum’s fifth in the last seven seasons.
