SMITH GOES UNDEFEATED AT ETSU INVITATIONAL

 

                JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. --- Tusculum College's Jessi Smith went 3-0 at last weekend's ETSU Fall Tennis Invitational.

 

                Smith's three wins came in a round-robin format in the Carolina Blue singles bracket as she posted victories over Kenzie Pfeiffer (Milligan), Kelsey Adkins (Virginia-Wise) and Paola Aybar (Mars Hill).

 

                Sophomore Caroline Crowe posted a 2-1 worksheet over the weekend in the Pink Bracket.  Crowe rallied from a set down to defeat Neely Edwards (Radford) 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.  Crowe lost to Laura Janke (Appalachian State) in the next round, but bounced back with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Stephanie Douglas (Carson-Newman).

 

                Tusculum freshman Blake Thompson went 2-1 in the Gray Bracket as she lost her opening match to Radford's Ally Spector 6-1, 6-4, but rebounded with wins over Janie Mullins (Milligan) and Casey Bookout (Presbyterian).

 

                TC newcomer Katelyn Doss also went 2-1 as she opened with a win over Milligan's Sara Hopkins, but fell in her next match to Christine Caforio (Georgia Southern).  She wrapped up her weekend play with a victory over Mary Ngiam of Cumberland.

 

                Amanda Pike, Heidi von der Lage, Heather Hayes, Bronwyn Hartley, Samantha Cantu and Jennifer Sparks each went 1-2 in their weekend singles matches for the Pioneers.

 

                The doubles duo of von der Lage and Crowe went 3-0 to win the Green Bracket as they defeated teams from Milligan, Cumberland and Carson-Newman.

 

                The team of Sparks and Pike went 2-1 in the Red doubles bracket, while Cantu and Doss also went 2-1 in Orange doubles action.  The TC doubles pairing of Smith and Hayes went 1-1 while Thompson and Hartley went 1-2 to wrap up the weekend for the Pioneers.

 

                Tusculum returns to action this Friday when they host West Virginia State for a 4 p.m. match at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
