Dr. Church received his Ph.D. in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1997. The title of Dr. Church's dissertation is Macrohabitat Factors Affecting Distribution Patterns of Freshwater Mussels in the Clinch River (Virginia/Tennessee).

He also holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health from East Tennessee State University. Dr. Church has been a professor at Tusculum College since 1993.

Prior to his doctoral work, Dr. Church served as Executive Director of the Scott County Water and Sewerage Authority. Dr. Church was also employed as an Environmental Planner for the Central Virginia Planning District Commission and as an Environmental Scientist for the State of New Mexico's Environmental Improvement Division. He has done consulting work for the Virginia Nature Conservancy, the Virginia Natural Heritage Program, and Covenant Coal Corporation.

His major areas of interest are freshwater ecology and tropical field biology. Dr. Church has led several field biology excursions with students to Costa Rica, as well as marine biology field trips to Florida and the Carolinas. His avocations include hiking, canoeing, nature photography, snorkeling, and traveling.
