Writing Rubric: The following rubric uses the writing competency to establish grading criteria. The writing portion of your assignment will be graded according to the following criteria:

The A assignment will fulfill the following criteria very well,

  • fulfilling all specifics of the assignment (i.e. includes research if a research paper),
  • establishing a clear, central idea,
  • demonstrating thoughtfulness and logic,
  • clearly organizing thoughts,
  • balancing generalities and details,
  • showing appropriate sentence structure and variety,
  • being virtually free of surface and usage errors.

The B assignment will fulfill the following criteria fairly well,

  • fulfilling all specifics of the assignment,
  • establishing a central idea,
  • recognizing the complexities of the topic,
  • organizing thoughts, balancing generalities and details,
  • showing appropriate sentence structure and variety,
  • being somewhat free of surface and usage errors.

The C assignment will fulfill the following criteria,

  • following the assignment,
  • establishing a central idea,
  • recognizing the complexities of the topic but may have some "thin" points
  • having competent organization, may have weak places,
  • showing competence in sentence structure and variety.
  • The paper may be weakened in one or more areas (main point, use of evidence, stylistic flaws, surface errors, etc.).

The D assignment will acknowledge the topic but not fully develop the topic and be weakened in one or more ways (lack of main point, lack of supporting detail, lack organization, contain stylistic flaws or serious usage errors).

The F assignment will be seriously flawed in terms of the above criteria or not address the assignment.
