ILLUSTRATING THE TEXT

CHOOSE an image that illustrates a text from class.   Write a full page discussing your choice and how the image and the text fit together.  The image should bring out a theme in the text, raise questions (providing a counter-point to the text), or otherwise add depth to what we are reading.

PRINT this page, take notes on the image, and attach it to your short paper.  It serves as a "warm-up" exercise for writing.

Image Analysis

Look at the image for a few minutes, first as a whole and then    at individual parts.  Visually “scan” each quadrant of the image.  Respond to the questions below.


Record bibliographic information  (title, author, date of image; book or website publication information)

Write down the author, date, place of origin, and context of the image.


What is the subject of the image?
Describe the people or central object.

 
Describe significant details.

Describe the setting--What is happening?


Is there a story being told? Is there any action?

 

Was there a reason for this image to being taken or created?

Describe the qualities of the scene.  If a photograph, is it well-lit? Dark?  If it is a work of art, what materials are used? What colors are used? Is there light or shadows?

Is the image open or cluttered? Well-arranged or chaotic?  Sharp or distorted?


What is the image's emotional content?

What can you infer from your observations?   

What questions does the image raise, for you?
