THE PERSEUS PROJECT
"Perseus is a continually growing digital library of resources
for studying the ancient world. The library's materials include
ancient texts and translations, philological tools, maps, extensively
illustrated art catalogs, and secondary essays on topics like
vase painting." Hosted by Tufts University.
You can "search" for a name, place, author, or vocabulary word.
The results of this word search will lead you to several types
of entries:
Encyclopedic entries on that word (Perseus has its own
encyclopedia).
English index entries, under which you will find selections
from Greek works in translation, having to do with your word.
The word will appear in red. The index connects to Greek histories
and literature.
"An Associated Bldg for Sculpture" (this phrase
refers to lists of art and sculpture associated with a particular
building, such as temple).
The Architecture Catalogue: entries in this catalogue
begin with the name of the building, followed by a section on
"plans" that includes the building's history (usually very helpful)
and a list of "images." Many of the words in each entry are linked;
to find images, though, you need to look for an actively linked
"archive number."
The Sculpture Catalogue: entries are organized similarly
to the architecture catalogue.
Region: your search results may indicate that your word
is a "keyword" for a region.
Atlas: your word may refer to the Perseus atlas, which
runs separately and has its own search box and lookup tool.
For example: when you search for "Zeus," Perseus gives
a list of results, all of which are active links to information.
Perseus tells you that:
