Ian VanLare was born in Albany, New York in 1965. He graduated from South Lakes High School (Reston, VA) 1983, and received a B.A. in Biology from Virginia Intermont college (Bristol, Virginia) in 1987. He earned a Ph.D. in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Blacksburg, VA) in 1995, focusing on bacterial physiology.
He was employed as an Assistant Professor of Biology at High Point University from 1993 to 1998. In 1998, he decided to return to the mountains and joined the faculty of Tusculum College as an Assistant Professor.
He became Departmental Chair and Associate Professor of Biology in 2003. Since 2001, he works as a Professor for the La Suerte Biological Field Station in Costa Rica during the summer, teaching Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Tropical Avian Ecology. Hobbies include hiking, traveling and wild life photography.
