Dr. Mahal earned his doctorate in motor learning and development from the University of Toledo. He has master's degrees in physical education from Howard University and Punjabi University (India).
He is very active in professional organizations. He has made presentations at the national convention of the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (HPERD). He has also made presentations at the national congress of the International Council for Health, Physical Education, Sport, and Dance, and presented a paper at the world congress of that organization, traveling to Egypt to do so. He has also received a commendation from the organization.
His work has also been recognized by these professional organizations. Dr. Mahal received the 2004 Honor Reward by the American Association for Active Lifestyles and Fitness, the highest national award given by that organization. In 2003, Dr. Mahal received a service award from the International Relations Council of the AAALF.
