After receiving a bachelor's degree in mathematics from The University of Minnesota, Dr. Long worked as a computer programmer. Looking for other challenges, he entered graduate school, first earning an M.S. from Eastern Washington University, and then receiving his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from The University of Montana.

Research interests include mathematical biology, differential equations, and asymptotic approximations. Outside of the classroom, Dr. Long likes music, traveling, and photography.
