Counseling can help give students the opportunity to learn to make better choices and decisions, improve relationships, develop increased confidence, overcome blocks to personal success, and acquire a sharper awareness and appreciation of her/his own needs as well as the needs of others.

COUNSELING SERVICES

Tusculum College provides enrolled students the opportunity to meet with a professional counselor in a confidential atmosphere at no cost to the student. A client is aided in exploring and expressing feelings, examining beliefs about himself/herself and the world, reflecting on patterns of behavior and, when appropriate, working to make healthy changes in that behavior. In addition to short-term personal counseling, Counseling Services also offers and welcomes group and couples counseling.

A counselor can be an additional resource for you! Sometimes, a family member, friend, teacher, or faith community leader is not the person with whom you want to talk, and knowing that there is someone else, someone trained in the counseling field to be objective, nonjudgmental, and non-authoritarian can help you to gain perspective on whatever need you wish to address. Counseling may help you learn to deal proactively, safely, and successfully with some common issues such as:

Coping with stress
Dealing with trauma such as intimate partner violence, abuse or assault
Substance abuse
Improving mood to decrease depression
Ways to manage anxiety
Coping with grief
Adjustment to college
Improving relationships
Understanding sexual orientation or identity

What about confidentiality?
The counselor will not reveal the names of clients to anyone, including officials of the college and family members nor do we reveal the content of the counseling session without the client's consent. Because the nature of counseling is sensitive and personal, all counseling services are confidential; however, due to the law, the counselor is required to breach confidentiality if the client discloses a desire to take his/her own life or the life of another identified person.
