ACT (Actors Coming
Together)
A.C.T. began in 1992 as the
brainchild of Marilyn duBrisk. The premise of the program is
to bring city, county, and home schooled high school students
together during a semester to perform a major theatrical
production. On average, between 70 and 150 students audition
and around 40 more sign up to work as set and stage crew. At
any one time, as many as 80 students can be up on Annie Hogan
Byrd's stage. Cooperation between all of the students is
the key...using the arts as a catalyst for this is what the
program is all about.
As one could imagine, taking on
this challenge alone, would be impossible, so Marilyn duBrisk
enlists the help of many volunteers (sometimes reaching
upwards of 100) from both the school systems and the
community. These volunteers contribute their talents helping
construct the sets, painting the sets and backdrops,
accompaniment, vocal direction, costume construction,
publicity, and during the show, crowd control. In
addition to all of our wonderful volunteers, the Arts Outreach
office keeps the ball rolling in order to produce very
successful shows.
