Acquisitions:

The forms annually sent to Schools seeking recommendations for  new library books, videos, and DVDs to be purchased over the summer are now all  in circulation. If faculty are reading this and have not yet received forms, please contact your division chairs. We appreciate the good work everyone has done with this in the past and know the recommendations will be equally well chosen this year. We commend the Science Division on being the first to turn in their requests this year. All others are due on May 8.

New Books List:

The next new books and videos list will be published in early May.

Lights:

We are advised that additional lighting will be going up in the library through May.  Preliminary work for this enlightenment has already begun in the conference and Special Collections areas.

Drop In:

When the library moved from Pioneer Gym to its new home last summer, it also brought with it the Juvenile Literature Collection housed in the Education Department in Grey. That collection has now been refreshed and expanded and given a new home on the upper floor, west side. 

A drop in to celebrate this important resource was held for education and other interested students and faculty on Monday, April 3, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Light refreshments were provided and all in attendance were impressed with the work of  coordinators Mrs. Kathy Hipps and Ms. Carolyn Parker in revitalizing this important collection. Heavy use of this collection is expected by all education majors taking the required children's literature course.

Durham Collection:

  Over 100 titles donated by state historian Walter Durham have now been prepared for the library’s Special Collection Room. Most of these contain a provenance by the author or owner. All new special collection titles were highlighted in last month’s New Books List.

Tours:

  The  library is alive with visitors, alone and  in groups small  and large. Prospective students and a number of candidates for various positions have been among the visitors and all were very impressed. The Library at Tusculum College will long continue as a top destination for those coming to our campus.

To Abingdon:

Anne, Charles, Marsha, and Mary  attended the Public Service Librarians meeting of the ACA Central Library at the Southwest Virginia campus in Abingdon, Va. on April 6-7 . This annual conference allowed our instructional librarians to obtain a first-hand look at new resources and to trade ideas with their colleagues from the 30+ other ACA institutions. Information Literacy was a key discussion point this year. Also,  librarians were encouraged to promote  the  ACA sponsored digital image database, ARTStor to all faculty as a tool for visual learning.  For more information and ideas on how ARTStor could supplement your course instruction,  contact Anne Reever.

TLC Library System Training:

An additional library staff training session on our automation system will be held at the Knoxville campus on May 16-17. Emphasis will be placed on learning the new inventory system, employing scanners.

Inventory:

The library’s main summer project for both campuses is print book inventory. Assuming the process runs smoothly—we’ve never done it before—we should know the status of every title by the time classes resume.  This may not sound terribly significant, but when you are discussing 50,000+ books, the knowledge gained is important. Employing scanners rather than fingers, the entire process should not only  be far more accurate but one which we can complete with the time and manpower available. Watch these pages in the fall for results.
