New Book/DVD Recommendations 2011:
Faculty wishing to recommend new titles for the circulating collections of the Greeneville or Knoxville libraries may do so at any time. In order that they might be entered into the institutional approval process, suggestions may be sent to the library director jsmith@tusculum.edu by e-mail (with complete pricing and bibliographic information) or sent online employing the form located on the library’s home page http://library.tusculum.edu/facpurchaserecommend.html. Occasionally, faculty will be sent lists of possible titles for acquisition seeking input or support. Amazon (and not its affiliate retailers) is the library’s vendor. Thanks in advance for your response.
New Reference Display:
In the spirit of the season, Mr. Tunstall has made a display of some of our latest Religion books on the top of the first Information Commons (reference room) book shelf behind the photocopy machine.
Fall Semester Programming Events:
October:

Haints and Boogers: Part 2: Elmer’s Revenge
For the second year, members of the library staff presented the program “Haints and Boogers: Ghosts and Spirits at Tusculum College and in Upper East Tennessee” in the Library’s Information Commons (reference room) on Thursday evening, October 29 at 6 p.m. Stories concerning paranormal activities on campus and in the surrounding community were explored for the 160 people in attendance. This year’s “Part 2: Elmer’s Revenge,” also included tales from the home states of three staff folks not born in Tennessee. Refreshments followed.
November:
Children’s Story Hour 1:

Members of the Garland library staff and Bonner leaders presented a 2nd annual children’s story hour program in the library on Thursday, November 18 from 6-7 p.m. The event was free and open to all Tusculum College family members ages 8 and under. Approximately 25 TC faculty, staff and students brought their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, etc. (about 20) for a fun night of stories, crafts and refreshments. A variety of photos from the event have been posted on the library website http://library.tusculum.edu/garlandlibrarystoryhour11182010.htm
December:

Lessons and Carols:
For an hour on the morning of December 8, the lobby of Garland Library was the scene for the annual Christmas tradition, the Festival of Lessons and Carols. Readings and carols were offered under the direction of Mark Stokes, Director of Religious Life, Church and Community Relations.
Spring Programming Events:
Details of our Spring programming are being firmed up as we write. Several programs are in the works and we can offer details on a couple of these.
January:

UFOs and Extraterrestrial Life. A program examining this phenomenon will be presented by Charles Tunstall. Time and location details to follow.
Copyright and Illegal Downloading Workshop This workshop will be presented in coordination with the faculty Instructional Support Committee on January 28, 2011, 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m., Hurley Room. Reservations for the limited seating are being taken and should be directed to the committee chair, Prof. Will Lewis. Funding is provided by a FELR grant from the ACA Central Library.
February

Children's Story Hour 2: Kathy Hipps, Carolyn Parker, and associates. Room 206 Library. Time and location details to follow.

Melanoma Awareness Forum. With students by now preparing once more to enjoy the sun, the Library and Athletic Training Department will offer an important awareness forum in Chalmers on Thursday February 28 at 6 p.m. Facilitated by the Cancer Registry of Laughlin Hospital, the forum, presented by noted Greeneville physicians Dr. Lawrence Reid and Steven Flohr, will provide faculty, students and all members of the Tusculum Community with the latest information regarding melanoma, the dreaded and potentially fatal disease.
March

Route 66. A fresh program by the sweet sounds of Route 66 will be presented in the Garland Library lobby. Time and location details to follow.
Millennium Upgrade:
The ACA Central Library will be installing an upgrade to the library’s Millennium online catalog on January 7. No significant difficulties with service are expected, either with the catalog or any of the databases it supports via the proxy server. If, however, you encounter any problems in using either the catalog or databases that day or the several following, please let us know.
Free e-books:
Check out 17 Websites to Download Free eBooks. You won’t find many best sellers here, but the various sites focus on classics, computer/technical/scientific texts, and self-published fiction in various formats. http://www.smashingapps.com/2010/05/18/17-websites-you-should-bookmark-to-download-free-ebooks.html
Ever wonder where all the free e-books come from that are available on Kindle, Nook, or IPad? Many of them are hosted by the Digital Book Index, which you can also access on your PC, Mac, or laptop. Over 160,000 are available—and Garland Library does not count them among its total—in a variety of disciplines http://www.digitalbookindex.org/search001a.htm
Citation guide:
EasyBib helps students properly cite research sources. Examples of MLA, APA, and Chicago style are freely available. Students can also enter citation elements (title,
date, author, etc.) and have them
formatted into MLA style for free. APA and Chicago style formatting require a
subscription.

Faculty/Staff Lounge:
A faculty/staff lounge (Room 319), dedicated to that purpose during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, remains set aside from the suite of study rooms on the second floor of the Greeneville library. The room may also be booked for committee meetings.
Coffee in Tech Services:
When visiting in the Greeneville library (8-5 weekdays), faculty and staff are invited to drop by the Technical Services office where a coffee pot is maintained. We hope as many folks who have time will swing by for a cup.
Staff News:
Library Director Jack Smith has been notified by Amazon that his latest title, USS Carondelet, has been chosen to become a Kindle book. Anyone wishing to sample a chapter of his 81st work may find it for free at Google http://books.google.com/books?id=dJ8rV8ro7L4C&printsec=frontcover&dq=uss+carondelet&hl=en&ei=O30LTaGLNoO78gat1KTEDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=book-thumbnail&resnum=1&ved=0CCYQ6wEwAA#v=onepage&q&f=false.
