New Book/DVD Recommendations 2012:

 Faculty wishing to recommend new titles for the circulating collections of the Greeneville or Knoxville libraries may do so at any time. In order that they might be entered into the institutional approval process, suggestions may be sent to the library director jsmith@tusculum.edu by e-mail (with complete pricing and bibliographic information) or sent online employing the form located on the library’s home page  http://library.tusculum.edu/facpurchaserecommend.html. Occasionally, faculty will be sent lists of possible titles for acquisition seeking input or support. Amazon (and not its affiliate retailers) is the library’s vendor. Thanks in advance for your response. 

New Databases AND E-books: 

PROJECT MUSE!  

Our latest online acquisition, the scholarly journal database, Project Muse, acquired via the ACA as the direct result of faculty request, has been added to Garland Library’s online research database page: http://library.tusculum.edu/researchdata.htm.. The platform is integrated for both e-books and journals; however, at this time, TC subscribes only to its journals. New journal titles are added frequently. For example, Muse began offering a full run of  the   Journal of Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness  on February 27.

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING:

The Special Programming calendar of the Thomas J. Garland has been  launched in a third season.  A number of events will be hosted at the main campus facility and we hope there will be wide attendance by people from the Tusculum and Greeneville communities.  Several programs are under development, but events on the calendar to date include:

Fall Semester Events:

September:

The Thomas J. Garland Library at Tusculum College hosted the annual display of textbooks under consideration for adoption for the upcoming year by local schools. The display was sponsored by the Tennessee Textbook Commission. The public was  invited to stop by the library during regular operating hours to review the items and make recommendations.  A concluding reception was held from 3:00-5:00p.m. on Thursday, September 29, 2011. Over 20 TC faculty, students, and local teachers attended.

October:

Haints and Boogers: Part 3: Elmer’s Awakening

For the third year, members of the library staff presented the program “Haints and Boogers:  Ghosts and Spirits at Tusculum College and in Upper East Tennessee” in the Library’s Information Commons (reference room) on Thursday evening, October 27 at 6 p.m. Stories concerning paranormal activities on campus and  in the surrounding community were explored by the 170 people in attendance. Refreshments followed.

November:

Children’s Story Hour 1:

Members of  the Garland library staff  presented a 3rd annual  children’s story hour  program in the library on Thursday, November 17 from 6-7 p.m.  The event was, as in the past, open to all Tusculum College family members  ages 8 and under.   A variety of photos from current and  past programs have been posted on the library website

December:

Lessons and Carols:

 For an hour on the morning of December 7, the lobby of Garland Library was the scene for the annual Christmas tradition, the festival of Lessons and Carols.  Readings and carols were offered under the direction of Mark Stokes, Director of Religious Life, Church and Community Relations. 

Spring Programming Events:

The spring special events programming schedule remains a work in progress. So far, we anticipate these presentations.

January:

Classical Guitar Recital.  A recital of classical guitar music was presented by Reference Library Charles Tunstall and noted guitar artist and instruction in the Thomas J. Garland Library lobby on Thursday January 26 at 6 p.m .  Vocals were offered by Susan Tunstall  and refreshments followed.  In excess of 120 people were in attendance.

February:

Children's Story Hour 2  On Tuesday, February 21, the Garland Library staff and student volunteers, Mara Rutherford and Shealy Bigach, , hosted the spring children’s story hour in the library.  Seven children, their parents, grandparents and aunts enjoyed reading the book “Snow” by Uri Shulevitz.  The children had a blast decorating snowman cupcakes and making snowman crafts.  The librarians especially liked watching the kids excitedly pick out books to check out.    The next story hour will take place in the fall semester;  Mrs. Hipps and Ms. Parker are already talking about how to make the event bigger and better than this one.   We would especially like to thank Mara for her wonderful assistance with the story hour since its inception three years ago.  She has been instrumental in the success of the program.  We will miss her greatly next year.  Good luck Mara from all your friends in the library!

Civil War Talk:  In an effort to reach additional members of the Tri-Cities community, the venue of the March programming event was located away from the main campus. The library’s premier extension event was held at Eastman Employee Center/Room 219 on Wilcox Dr. in Kingsport, TN. On Monday, March 12, Jack Smith presented an the illustrated program before the spring meeting of the Tri-Cities Civil War Roundtable.  All members of the TC community were invited to attend.

Special Visitors:

On Wednesday, February 22, the Garland Library staff had the pleasure of conducting a tour of our library for over 60 students from Camp Creek Elementary School in Greene County.  The tour was a special treat for Camp Creek students who have agreed to participate in a new initiative at the school called “Read for 20”, being led by their Reading Specialist, Misty Mercer.   As a part of the program, students pledged to read for at least 20 minutes each day.  

FREE RESOURCES:

From our friends at TENN-SHARE, we note the availability of Documentary Heaven. This site provides access to more than 1,700 FREE documentaries on the WWW. Subjects cover everything from Nikola Tesla to “Know Your Mushrooms.” On the down side, prior review is recommended as some documentaries have an agenda. Still, the potential for several useful nuggets is here http://www.documentaryheaven.com.

STAFF ACTIVITIES:

Library Director Jack has published the cover article in the March 2012 issue of "North & South," the magazine of the Civil War Society. The article, "Running the Gauntlet: CSS Arkansas vs. the Federal Combined Fleets, July 15, 1862" sheds new and detailed light on the saga of the makeshift Confederate ironclad and is based on his recently-published book "CSS Arkansas: A Confederate Ironclad on the Western Waters."

Smith will attend the annual spring meeting of the ACA Library Directors Council at Tamarack, Beckley, WV, on April 12-13.

Monthly Statistics:

 In every number of the Reel & Page published through the school year, we provide our most recent usage statistics, occasionally catching up for months unavailable  (lag time for the latest is usually a month or so). Comparison figures between the current school year and that preceding are published in either the April issue or a special May issue.  The 2010-11 comparison is in the May 2011 special edition, found at < http://library.tusculum.edu/archivesrnp/reelnpageMayextra2011.htm> .
