XV, no. 3 TUSCULUM COLLEGE LIBRARY December 2004-January 2005
Welcome:
We hope all readers had a wonderful holiday season. Welcome back for what should prove a most exciting 2005.
Reserves:
As noted at the December faculty meeting and in several special e-mailings since, the library is now employing a new reserve form (available on-line).
IMPORTANT. The new procedure was made necessary by the growing success of the reserve process. As more faculty add materials and students use these items, more formality is required to ensure efficiency. Thus, we ask that you rigidly follow the 48 hours-in-advance-of-use delivery requirement. We just must avoid those situations when faculty make same-day-as-delivery assignments or make assignments and then bring in materials with students at their heels. Please help us to help you and your students. Otherwise, as flexible as we are, we can no longer guarantee, given the demand, that all will be ready on short notice.
To review the reserve policy, please refer to the following link: http://library.tusculum.edu/libraryreservepolicy.htm
New Books:
Another new books list is expected to be posted soon. Watch for it!
Continuing Instructional opportunities:
Reference/Instruction Librarian, Charles Tunstall recently created a presentation on locating professional journal articles. With continuing developments and refinements in a number of our research databases (see below), students exposed to his sessions have more success in accessing this type of literature. If readers would like an individual demonstration of the presentation or would like for him to address a class, please contact Charles at ext. 5124 or send an e-mail to ctunstal@tusculum.edu
Latest on ARTstor, our newest database:
On January 10, 2005, ARTstor (www.artstor.org) announced that fifteen art museums have committed to share digital image collections and associated data through ARTstor. As added, images and data from these collections will enhance ARTstor's ability to provide broad-based access to art images for educational and scholarly use in museums, colleges and universities, and the K-12 sector.
The additional contributing museums include:

The Cleveland Museum of Art (www.clevelandart.org)
Davis Museum and Cultural Center, Wellesley College (www.davismuseum.wellesley.edu)

LIBRARY RESOURCES IN REVIEW:
INDUSTRY AND COMPANY INFORMATION
The Library subscribes to a variety of business research databases that provide company and industry information. All of these databases can be accessed through the Library Website under the Research Databases link both on and off campus. Please call the library to obtain access information to these resources from off campus. If you are a business or organizational management faculty member and would like to schedule a library instruction session for us to instruct your students on using these information resources, please contact Charles Tunstall (Residential) or Anne Reever (GPS).
EBSCOhost: Business Source Elite contains detailed company profiles for the world's 10,000 largest companies as provided by Datamonitor. Some of the profiles contain SWOT analysis but contain limited financial and industry information. To access this information click on the “Company Profiles” tab in the top menu bar of the Business Source Elite Homepage.
INFOTRAC II: Business and Company Resource Center is comprehensive in scope and can fulfill a variety of business information needs including financial data from the past 4 years and links to current news articles about a company. Industry information is provided from the Encyclopedia of Global Industries 2005 produced by Thomson Gale. Industry market analyses are also included.
LEXIS NEXIS Academic Universe contains company financial information from last 3 years, profiles, a function to compare companies on specific criteria and SEC filings and reports. Reference resources include the NAIC-SIC Directory, Federal Business Opportunities, and The American Marketplace.
ProQuest: Hoover’s Company Records. Pithy introductory comments aside, this well known resource includes company overviews and includes limited financial data from the past 3 years. Information coverage varies by company.
Standard and Poor’s NetAdvantage is the most comprehensive in presentation of financial and investment information. Industry data includes in depth comparative company analysis including profit ratios and guides on analyzing particular industries. Company data includes financials and valuations from the past 6 years, stock reports, corporate actions and corporate records.
! Value Line Investment Survey has recently been added to our online research databases and provides 12 reports per year covering a particular industry and its companies. Each report contains a brief 1 page summary of the industry and a one page rating of each company’s potential growth in the upcoming year with a 10 year charted history of financials including target price ranges for 3 years into the future. Print copies of this resource are also available in the Greeneville campus library. --Anne Reever
SUMMARIES:
Here are reports on library activities for November and December 2004 and year-to-date. They are followed by a full report on individual database usage, in so far as figures are available.
In the data which follows,
the first of two figures is that for Tate Library – Greeneville and the second
is for Tate Library – Knoxville; where there is only one number, it is combined
for both. Some items do not lend themselves to this easy breakdown and are
addressed as appropriate; several people log on to visit our links library or
free databases for which we have no figures, e.g., FirstGov. The various
database vendors all provide access to more than one database; however, the
complete list (51 different titles) is too long for breakdown here.
