New Book Selection:

 It is not too soon for departments to begin compiling their acquisitions wish lists for 2009-2010. Forms to begin the process will be sent to school directors at the end of January 2009.

De-Accessioning: 

We have been fortunate over the past 6-7 years to be able to add many new titles to the circulating print collections of the Thomas J. Garland Library. The institutional goal of 65,000 print titles on the shelves in Greeneville is visible. Last year alone and for the first time in the school’s history, over 3,000 were added to the shelves.

The TJGL has an on-going program of de-accessioning (the familiar term is “weeding”) titles no longer viable in order to free up space to host new acquisitions.  Faculty input is sought and encouraged. These reviews have been ongoing and discarded titles are made available to students, faculty and other patrons via a free

 book truck parked near the circulation desk.

Information Literacy Session Scheduling:

The Information Literacy program in support of the Residential College is rapidly approaching in terms of volume and effectiveness that which has been in place for GPS  since 2003. Faculty seeking sessions with Mrs. Hipps and Mr. Tunstall, our Residential Information Team, are advised to get your requests in early. We have gone from a time when we had to beg folks to let us help, to the luxury of having to carefully check schedules.

ACA Summit:

Anne Reever Osborne and Kathy Hipps joined with faculty member Rhonda Fawbush Smith in presenting the paper Making It Real (Realistic Expectations of Achievement & Learning): Integrating Information Literacy Objectives with Program Goals at the ACA Summit, held at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon on October 17. Several faculty and librarians attending the session provided positive feedback. The presentation included an outline of a plan of Information Literacy across the GPS BSOM and Residential BA Business programs using online interactive tutorials tailored specifically to common courses in each  curriculum.; Adobe Captivate was the featured software for the tutorial design. School textbook exhibit: 

The Thomas J. Garland Library recently hosted the Tennessee Dept. of Education public school textbook review collection exhibit. Teachers from county schools were able to view the titles under consideration for adoption in the areas of science, home economics, and mathematics. Many of those titles not added to the collections of the Garland Library or the Science Department are slated for transfer to the Instructional Materials Center.

Painting exhibited: 

A painting by a Cleveland, Tennessee artist, Dorothy Stiles entitled "Tennessee Mist" is currently on display in the Information Commons.
