Welcome:

This is the 18^th year of publication for this bi-monthly newsletter. On behalf of the entire library staff  (Jack, Anne, Charles, Mary, Carolyn, Marsha, Kathy, Elaine, and Jonathan), readers old and new and regardless of location are invited to join us in person or online as Tusculum College continues another exciting school year.

Celebration!  

We are very pleased to announce that Mrs. Kathy Hipps, Information Literacy Librarian & Assistant Cataloger, has just been awarded the degree of Master of Science in Library and Information Sciences from the University of Tennessee. This is the same professional degree held by Jack, Anne, Mary, Charles, and Marsha.  Her degree was earned through UT’s 40-hr. online program, which is fully-accredited by ALA and other groups and is aimed at allowing advancement for working library and other paraprofessional staffers.

So far as we know, she is the third person in Greeneville after Madge Walker, the public librarian, and Marsha Griffith, our own Public Services Librarian, to earn  her library degree in this pioneering way.  Congrats Kathy! Your initiative is appreciated. Well done! 

TC library now enjoys the services of six professional librarians, the highest number employed by the institution in its history.

A Wedding!

We are also delighted to note the July wedding of Assistant Library Director for Distance Learning Anne Reever to Mr. Kennith Osborne.  The beautiful ceremony in the chapel of Greeneville’s 1^st Presbyterian Church was followed by a reception attended by family and friends. The new couple resides in Johnson City.

Library Hours:

The Greeneville campus is open until 10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday.  Friday hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. On Saturday, we operate from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and on Sunday we open at 6 p.m. At the Knoxville regional Center,  regular hours are Monday - Thursday, 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m.Friday, 2:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Saturday, 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Sunday  CLOSED

Any changes to these library regular  hours, and  other activities, are posted on the library website http://library.tusculum.edu.

New Catalog System: 

The Millenium automation/on-line catalog  system  came on line for the College on July 1. A shared ACA endeavor, Innovative Interfaces Millenium replaces the The Library Corporation system employed from 2004 to spring 2007. The system has been introduced to students and faculty  participating in the library’s various class-related Information Literacy sessions and to faculty and staff participating in other venues. Introductions continue.

Historians meet:

On August 21, the library hosted a meeting of local historians and other interested parties regarding issues related to the pre-Civil War underground railroad. The meeting was chaired by state historian Walter T. Durham.

Information Literacy:

 Information Literacy sessions for undergraduates on the Greeneville campus have already increased in number significantly this year, growing from just five (5) in August 2006 to seventeen  (17) in the same first  weeks of school this year. Instruction and services to GPS students and faculty were continued through the summer by the DL librarians.

Brown Bag Lunches: 

On September 5, the library and IT staff began hosting  a series of Brown Bag Lunches to share resources with faculty and staff. First semester programming includes an introduction to the new ACA shared catalog system, Millenium;  introduction of a cognitive mapping tool – Inspiration; a review of research databases; a look at employing free e-books/links in historical research as centered on the TC bell; an introduction to the classroom integration of ARTSTOR and JSTOR; a tool-specific look at Sakai; a review of new survey tools; and two sessions on the integration of Information Literacy and Instructional Technology into courses.

Distinguished visitor:

 Dr. Judy Muyskens, Vice President for Academic Programs with the Appalachian College Association, joined the library staff for discussions on the morning of September 7.

Faculty/Staff Lounge:

A faculty/staff lounge (Room 319), dedicated to that purpose during the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, has been set aside from the suite of study rooms on the second floor of the Greeneville library.  Coffee, courtesy of the President’s office, is available. We hope as many folks who have time to swing by for a cup or a visit will do so. The room may also be booked for committee meetings.

 In every number of the Reel & Page published through the school year, we will provide our most recent usage statistics (lag time is usually one month).
