Alexander Street Press and ARTstor

Alexander Street Press History Databases  Access to primary source documents in American History including American Civil War: Letters & Diaries, Early Encounters in North America and North American Women's Letters & Diaries.  For more information on each of these databases click on the above link.

ARTstor  Access to approximately 300,000 visual images in digital format and the corresponding data.  ARTstor documents artistic and historical traditions across many time periods and cultures and is focused primarily on the arts.  ARTstor is also a great resource for students, faculty and researchers in other fields.  Most of the collection has been derived through collaborations with libraries, museums, photographic archives, publishers, slide libraries and individual scholars.  Sources include:  The Image Gallery, The Carnegie Arts of the United States, The Huntington Archive of Asian Art, The Illustrated Bartsch, The Mellon International Dunhuang Archive, and The Museum of Modern Art Architecture and Design Collection. Proprietary software tools are available on ARTstor to enable users to view and analyze images through features such as panning and zooming and to save images for use in lectures and presentations.  A Quick Search Guide is available for students and faculty via the Instructional Handouts.

ANNUAL REVIEWS

"Founded in 1932, Annual Reviews provides researchers, professors, and scientific professionals with a definitive academic resource in 32 scientific disciplines. CQ RESEARCHER

 CQ Researcher  This award-winning database explores a single "hot" issue in the news in depth each week. Topics range from social and teen issues to environment, health, education and science and technology. There are 44 reports produced each year including four expanded reports. Numerous charts and graphs are included in each objective and balanced report written by  an experienced journalist and includes all sides of an issue.

CREDO Reference  What used to be only available in the Reference Section of the library is now available online through this database.   Over 350 Reference titles from the most reliable reference information publishers are available at your fingertips.   Need to know how to pronounce a word or phrase?  Check out the dictionaries with  audio pronunciation.  Need a visual aid of the Human  Digestive system?   Need an historical map of the Nile River valley in Egypt.  Check out the Concise Atlas of World History.   This is just a sample of the wealth of credible, accurate, reliable, information you can find quicker than scanning through millions of  questionable hits via a search engine like Google or on Wikipedia.

EBSCO  Through EBSCOhost web, student have a variety of credible periodical and reference databases to choose: 

Business Source Elite provides full-text for nearly 1,100 titles including nearly 500 peer reviewed journals covering business, management, economics, finance, banking, accounting, and more.

PsycARTICLES contains more than 40,000 full-text articles from 57 journals published by the American Psychological Association and allied organizations.  

PsycINFO , from the American Psychological Association (APA), "contains nearly 2.3 million citations and summaries of scholarly journal articles, book chapters, books, and dissertations, all in psychology and related disciplines, dating as far back as the 1800s. 97 percent of the covered material is peer-reviewed. Journal coverage, which spans 1887 to present, includes international material selected from more than 2,100 periodicals in more than 25 languages."

Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection "is a comprehensive database covering information concerning topics in emotional and behavioral characteristics, psychiatry & psychology, mental processes, anthropology, and observational & experimental methods. This is the world's largest full text psychology database offering full text coverage for nearly 400 journals."

Library, Information Science & Technology Abstract (LISTA) indexes more than 600 periodicals, plus books, research reports and proceedings. Subject coverage includes librarianship, classification, cataloging, bibliometrics, online information retrieval, information management and more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid-1960s.

Regional Business News This database provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States. This database is updated on a daily basis.

SPORTDiscus with Full Text  "is the world's most comprehensive source of full text for sports & sports medicine journals, providing full text for more than 490 journals indexed in SPORTDiscus. This authoritative file contains full text for many of the most used journals in the SPORTDiscus index - with no embargo. With full-text coverage dating back to 1985, SPORTDiscus with Full Text is the definitive research tool for all areas of sports & sports medicine literature."

Ebrary  an online library of over 30,000 full text full image books from all academic disciplines.    No username or password is required to access or read books from this database on campus or from any computer that is internet ready. ABC CLIO  e-Books  Over 3,000 full text, full image book titles from an outstanding academic book publisher available for searching and downloading.    Access available from off campus through the off campus research databases link.  Titles include all areas of the liberal arts. 

Springer Behavioral Sciences Ebooks  Approximately 70 book titles related to Psychology and the Behavioral Sciences.  To view and read those available at Tusculum from within the vendor database, choose titles that have a green box next to them. 

Wiley Interscience E-books  current electronic books of interest to students and faculty in psychology, biological, environmental, and physical sciences and mathematics.

Encyclopedia Britannica. The world's first commercial on-line encyclopedia is available to members of the Tusculum College Community.

ERIC

 ERIC, the Educational Resources Information Center,  is accessible via the World Wide Web.  Beginning October 2004, ERIC will include FREE full text documents previously available only on the subscription service EDRS.

  ERIC MICROFORMS: For those seeking documents prior to 1993, microfiche collections of the actual ERIC documents are available, in Tennessee,  at Tusculum College (use the online request form to request a specific ERIC document) , as well as  Carson Newman College, ETSU,  Milligan College,  and the UT campuses at Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Martin and several Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) institutions.

OXFORD REFERENCE ONLINE

Oxford Art Online formerly Grove Art Online provides online access to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art with constant additions of new material and updates, plus extensive image links and search capabilities.

Oxford Music Online  formerly known as Grove Music Online, is an integrated online music resource that includes the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians,  New Grove Dictionary of Opera, New Grove Dictionary of Jazz,  Oxford Companion to Music, Oxford Dictionary of Music, and The New Grove Dictionary of American Music. This newly revamped database also includes links to other Oxford reference resources,  links to the RILM database of Music Bibliography and external audio links and other learning resources.

HERITAGE QUEST

ProQuest's  HeritageQuest Online contains over 40,000 digitized genealogy and family history resources, federal census records, Revolutionary War pension application files, and more.

INFOTRAC

Infotrac I is our gateway to the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL), a collection of full-text databases from Gale Cengage. Here you will find not only Academic Onefile and Expanded Academic Index ASAP  databases but several other useful collections as well. These include Infotrac Onefile, Business and Company ASAP, the National Newspaper Index, Health Reference Center-Academic,  General Reference Center Gold,  Informe (Revistas en Espanol), and the Kid's, Junior, and Student versions of Infotrac. Also, several subject collections are listed including: , Professional Collection, Computer Resources, General Business File ASAP and International, and Health and Wellness Resource Center and Literature Resource Center.

Please be advised that Infotrac I is also available at Tennessee Public Libraries, where it may also be employed for free. You may quickly determine the hours of operation and address of your public library through the Directory of Tennessee Public Libraries.

Also located here is the LegalTrac database.   Also included  are Gale databases  that are designed to supplement the TEL and  include  Health and Wellness Resource Center; and  LiteratureResource Center, which covers more than 90,000 writers, with in-depth coverage of 2,000 of the most-studied authors,  and,  Books and Authors a one-stop source of expert recommendations concerning mainstream or genre fiction and nonfiction book titles in all disciplines.

JSTOR

JSTOR, "Journal Storage," comes to TC  as the result of a grant from the Appalachian College Association. This database allows users to examine full-text scholarly journal titles in the areas of Economics, Mathematics, Demography, Philosophy, Finance, Political Science, History, Sociology, Ecology, Higher Education, and Asian Studies. Please note that; each journal has a "rolling-wall" of currency, so be sure to check the journals list to see dates covered.  JSTOR is currently available on the TC Network at Tate Library in Greeneville and at the Knoxville Center.

LEXIS NEXIS ACADEMIC UNIVERSE

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe  is well known for its emphasis on business, law, and medicine and provides all manner of information from full-text periodical articles to text of cases involving local, regional courts, and federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. Also contains full text newspaper and newswire articles.

NEWSBANK NEWSPAPER COLLECTION

Newsbank's Tennessee Newspaper Collection includes access to full text Tennessee newspapers including theand Knoxville News Sentinel and articles from national and world  newswire services.  Also included is access to 6 full text  magazines such as Newsweek, and Parenting. 
 

Polling the Nation  Self described as the "Ultimate Survey Database", provides a compilation of data of "more than 14,000 surveys conducted by over 1000 polling organizations in the United States and 100 other countries from 1986 to the present time." Sample polling organizations include Harris International and The Pew Center.  Also included is the companion database  Student Views which provides students the opportunity to participate in the polling process with faculty direction and  supervision in conjunction with courses.

Proquest ABI INFORM COMPLETE provides full-text databases for those engaged in the study of Business, Education, Management, Economics, Banking, Accounting, Finance, and related topics and covers indexing, abstracts and full text information from 1971-present.

Hoovers Company Records "
Find up to date proprietary editorial content covering more than 40,000 public and non-public companies and 225,000 key executives. Hoover's, widely recognized as a leading provider of corporate data, delivers in depth industry analyses, information on a company's location, summary financials, top competitors, top officers, and more."

Proquest Criminal Justice "ProQuest Criminal Justice is a comprehensive database supporting research on crime, its causes and impacts, legal and social implications, as well as litigation and crime trends. As well as U.S. and international scholarly journals, it includes correctional and law enforcement trade publications, crime reports, crime blogs and other material relevant for researchers or those preparing for careers in criminal justice, law enforcement and related fields."

Proquest Education Journals offers complete information on hundreds of educational topics, drawing full-text articles from over 400 leading journals for the period since 1988. Self-help training for the Proquest and Hoover's databases

Proquest Nursing and Allied Health Source  "This database offers reliable, comprehensive coverage of the fields of nursing and allied health including journals, video, dissertations, reference books and more."

REFERENCE ONLINE

Gale Virtual Reference Library (TEL) and Gale Virtual Reference Library  II are collections of online reference works  both general and specialized  multidisciplinary research. These reference materials once were accessible only in the library, but now you can access them online from the library or remotely 24/7. Because each library creates its own e-Book collection, the content you see may vary if you use the database at different libraries.
Tusculum College Library subscribes to two different collections:

Gale Virtual Reference  With titles available through  TEL contains the following reference books that are fully searchable and printable and also titles purchased for Tusculum College by the Bowen Central Library of the Appalachian College Association. 
 

STANDARD AND POOR'S NETADVANTAGE
 

Standard and Poor's NetAdvantage provides access to a broad range of business information including up to date financial information, credit ratings, analytical services, and industry surveys on financial markets from around the world.   It is an independent analyst of forecasts and trends in the business world.  A ready source for statistical economic information,  it provides guidance in analyzing the environment of industries worldwide. It provides analysis and statistical information on 60,000 companies trading in the US markets. Provides contact information for over 100,000 public and private US and multinational companies and much more.
 

STATESMAN'S YEARBOOK

The Statesman's Yearbook  is an excellent and current resource for country information from around the world.   It is a current and reliable source of political, economic and social information.
 

VALUE LINE Investment Survey

Value Line Investment Survey is described on the website as "a comprehensive source of information and advice on approximately 1,700 stocks, more than 90 industries, the stock market, and the economy."  It provides weekly updated reports including financial and stock price forecasts, market forecasts, and current statistics to assist the investor.  It is also available in paper format  in the  Reference Section on the Greeneville campus.

NON FULL TEXT DATABASES
 

INGENTA

Another valuable source is IngentaConnect, a bibliographic and database service which allows users to review its database of 5 million plus periodical articles. Users may purchase articles from Ingenta or obtain them via traditional on site or interlibrary loan requests. To employ, once you have your choice of connection, click on down through the various ordering, etc. questions until you come to a list which offers you access by word, title, etc. Employ word as a subject index. This is really a very good source to learn about the existence of articles,  which can then be requested through Interlibrary Loan if TC Library does not have the journal title in its holdings.

DISSERTATIONS/MASTERS PAPERS

TC GPS Master's Papers  a list of recent Tusculum College GPS Master's Research papers available for browsing at the TC Greeneville or off campus sites.

PQDT Open "provides the full text of open access dissertations and theses free of charge. The authors of these dissertations and theses have opted to publish as open access and make their research available for free on the open Web. Open Access Publishing is a new service offered by ProQuest's UMI Dissertation Publishing, and we expect to have many more open access dissertations and theses over time.  You can quickly and easily locate dissertations and theses relevant to your discipline, and view the complete text in PDF format."

The dissertation source UMI/Proquest Digital Dissertations, contains UMI dissertations published after 1996.    You have the option of purchasing the entire dissertation in paper or digital form. 

Also, the University of Virginia has a directory  and short abstracts of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) in the Humanities that are currently in progress or have been recently completed.  

 The Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations  is another source that has digital theses and dissertations available for FREE or  purchase.  All are excellent substitutes for Dissertation Abstracts which is available at larger universities such as ETSU or UT.

    OPEN ACCESS, FREE AND PUBLIC DATABASES

DOAJ: Directory of open access journals.  Over 2200 journals available free and in full text. "The aim of the Directory of Open Access Journals is to increase the visibility and ease of use of open access scientific and scholarly journals thereby promoting their increased usage and impact."
 

Findarticles at BNet  This  free index to full-text magazines which appear on the web (including a few not covered by the subscription databases noted above), is, surprisingly, overlooked on the links pages of most libraries . Not to be taken lightly, it is recommended.

Google Scholar  The popular search engine's new progeny provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and other scholarly organizations.   Take heed that much may not be available for free in full text. 

PLoS:  Public Library of Science  Open access resource to journals in biology and medicine.

NLM Gateway allows you to search MEDLINE and other health databases seamlessly and is provided by the National Library of Medicine.  Catalog information for books, serial titles, and audiovisuals, consumer health information, directory of health organizations, and various meeting abstracts are examples of what is available through this point of access.
 

 AGRICOLA. (AGRICultural OnLine Access) created by the National Agriculture Library and its cooperators maintains a database of citations in agricultural literature from 1970 to the present.  Topics covered in its indexes include "animal and veterinary sciences, entomology, plant sciences, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, farming and farming systems, agricultural economics, extension and education, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences."

USA.gov  is described on its website as: "... the official U.S. gateway to all government information, ... the catalyst for a growing electronic government."  All government departments, branches and agencies that have a web presence are accessible through this website.
