Introduction:
TC Library's subscription Research Databases and the World Wide Web offer a large number of valuable sites to those studying in the field of physical education. We have gathered some of these here and have arranged them into two major categories:

BIOGRAPHY RESOURCE CENTER + THE COMPLETE MARQUIS WHO'S WHO, via Infotrac II, includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals and print reference works. Search for world leaders, sports artists or sports heroes, business people (e.g., broadcasters, team owners), noted physical educators, etc.
BUSINESS AND COMPANY ASAP, from the Tennessee Electronic Library (TEL) on Infotrac I, provides researchers with information on companies, markets and industries. Valuable for students of sports management and marketing.
BUSINESS SOURCE ELITE, from EBSCO, provides full-text for over 1000 journals covering business, management, economics, finance, banking, accounting, and more. Valuable for students of sports management and marketing. back to top
CINAHL via EbscoHost is the authoritative resource for nursing and allied health professionals, students, educators and researchers. This database provides indexing for 2,737 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health. The database contains more than 1,000,000 records dating back to 1982. An important resource for those interested in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine as well.
CUSTOM NEWSPAPERS, from Gale on Infotrac II. Particularly valuable for students of sport history, management, broadcasting and marketing. Provides full-text articles from 100 U.S. and International Newspapers. The New York Times, Washington Post, and Nashville Tennessean are among the titles indexed.
ERIC (Education Resources Information Center) This is an extremely important source of materials for PE teachers, containing as it does all manner of reports, studies, bibliographies, etc. Free access to full text documents from 1993-present. Archived documents available in the Library's ERIC Microfiche collection.
ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA, the world's first commercial on-line encyclopedia is available to members of the Tusculum College Community and to off campus students through the TC Proxy server as well.
ENCYCLOPEDIA OF LIFE SCIENCES comes via the ACA Central Library; in addition to an A-Z encyclopedia, the site also includes a glossary and a database of 3,000 peer-reviewed and weekly-updated articles. Helpful for those interested in the science of sport.
EXPANDED ACADEMIC ASAP, from Gale on Infotrac I, meets research needs across all academic disciplines and is TC's primary subscription database for current scholarly journals in the social science/humanities disciplines, including physical education; also cites news magazines and newspapers - many with full text and images! back to top
HEALTH REFERENCE CENTER ACADEMIC on Infotrac I provides access to full text journal articles in the medical, nursing and related fields and may prove helpful to those interested in Athletic Training, Sports Medicine, Physical and Occupational Therapy.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS RESOURCE CENTER, from Gale on Infotrac I, can be used to find magazines, journals, newspapers, definitions, directories, and information on: Fitness, Sports Medicine, Health and Nutrition, Diseases and Injuries, Alcohol and Drug abuse, etc. Includes citations from a large variety of health journals, as well as Sports Medicine Reports and the American Journal of Sports Medicine.
INFOTRAC ONEFILE, from TEL on Infotrac I, is a one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: including history, biography, and all matter of social science. Millions of full-text articles, many with images, updated daily. May be employed with the more academic EXPANDED ACADEMIC ASAP. Includes hundreds of full text articles from such journals as Sports Illustrated Women, Football Digest and The Sporting News.
JSTOR (Journal Storage), available on campus and through our ACA proxy server, contains full-text articles in the sports-related areas of economics and history. There is a "rolling wall" of currency, meaning titles more recent than three to five years old must be found in one of the other databases described here, e.g. EXPANDED ACADEMIC ASAP.
LEXIS NEXIS ACADEMIC UNIVERSE, Resources in business and law. Lets you find articles in all major law reviews, law journals, specialty law and bar association journals.. A bonanza for those looking into any aspect of the law in relation to sports and PE.
NETLIBRARY is a repository of full-text electronic books, including many recent titles in history and the other social sciences. Hundreds of titles on sport and phys ed-related topics are included.
PROFESSIONAL COLLECTION, again a TEL resource via Infotrac I, allows degreed and student teachers access to a large collection of full-text professional education titles, including full-text journal articles, relative to PE.
PROQUEST EDUCATION JOURNALS offers complete information on hundreds of educational topics, including PE, drawing full-text articles from over 260 leading education journals for the period since 1988.
PsychARTICLES, from EBSCO, contains more than 25,000 articles from 42 journals published by the American Psychological Association and allied organizations. Many of these have to do with Education Psychology as well as sport and PE related topics. back to top

PE, Health, and Sports Directories & Free Databases
A number of directories and free database sources, rich in link information and, in some cases, full text reports and articles, are available to those willing to take the time to test them out. Here are several well worth exploring.
Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles
(AAFLA) links page is a preferred site for those seeking a gateway to
international sports links with emphasis on history and the Olympic Games.
Amazon.Com serves as a free "Books in Print" and can provide fairly complete
bibliographic information on thousands of physical education/sports books and
videos.
Australian National Sport Information Centre guide to Full Text Sport
Collections/Databases on the Web should be the first stop for those seeking free
phys ed/sports databases to supplement the more general, but full, resources
listed in our Databases section above. The Australian list is fully linked to
the sites in question.
National Recreation Database, maintained by
Canada's Leisure Information Network, covers leisure, recreation, culture and
sport in North America
Olympic Information
Center
from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles is very complete; click on
the AAFLA link above and scroll down the page.
Open Directory Project--Sports rivals, and for some areas exceeds, the work
in the WWVL-Sport, noted above; it is claimed in some circles that this is the
largest multi-sport link directory on the Internet.
Scholarly Sports Sites is a subject directory
maintained by the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada; it is very complete.
The Sport Journal is a
full-text periodical independently available from the United States Sports
Academy in Mobile, AL
SportQuest,
"With over 6.5 million pages of sport related

Sport history has become an enormously popular academic discipline within the past decade or so, not only here, but around the world. The sites we note below are international in flavor and include such multinational events as the Olympics. Most of these groups publish journals, the articles from which can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.
The Ancient Olympics, drawn
from the Perseus Project on ancient Greek history at Tufts University, allows
users to compare ancient and modern Olympic sports, tour the site of Olympia as
it looks today, learn about the context of the Games and the Olympic spirit, or
read about the Olympic athletes who were famous in ancient times.
Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles provides
full-text documents and other publications related to sports history and the
Olympic Games.
Australian Society for Sports History covers the Pacific and includes not
only local history in its journal, but some Olympic references as well.
BBC History of the Olympics was created during the 2000 Sydney games, and
has been recently and continuously updated. Contains links of any Olympic year
to read brief summaries of what made that year unique in Olympic history.
British Society for Sport History provides helpful bibliographic information
and indices on sport history, with emphasis on sport in the U.K. and Europe.
European Committee for Sports History coordinates the work of sports
historians throughout Europe.
International
Society of Olympic Historians promotes the study of
Olympic history and offers insights into its official publication, the Journal
of Olympic History.
North American Society for Sport History promotes the preservation and
teaching of the history of sport, exercise, and physical activity worldwide.
Sports Philatelists International
looks at not only sports and Olympic stamp collecting, but the history behind
events depicted on postage.
Rodney Fort's Sports Economics Sports Economics Data Directory
is exceptionally complete; arranged by sport
Sports Business News features a daily summary
(actually, very close paraphrasing) of articles from dozens of newspapers and
magazines.
SportsLink provides
a bonanza of data on the sporting goods industry, with
information on manufacturing, products, and relative state and Federal
legislation.

All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, 1943-1954 is the official
site for the history of women in baseball. Learn about the formation of the
organization featured in the movie "A League of Their Own"; covers, the rules
of conduct for the players, and rules of play. There are articles about the
league and biographies of the players as well as team information and
photographs.
Baseball America, the journal's online site; covers the game from the high
school, college, and minor league perspective.
Baseball Index, from the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), is
the primary source for online baseball research; contains bibliographic records
for 193,600 documents to all aspects of the game (including college) from the
1800's forward; users may search by advanced (titles, ISBNs, etc.), topic, or
person, with persons including authors. Presents the first 50 citations found.
If you are searching for players (including Negro Leagues) and want the first
100 references (plus access to the on-line version of The Baseball Chronology),
use the same group's
Baseball Library instead
and search under the A-Z players listing--and the bios offered are fascinating!
The same site offers information on teams and excerpts from new books.
BaseballReference.Com
permits its users to find biographical and statistical
information on every major leaguer active since 1885!
Black Baseball's Negro Baseball Leagues presents the history of the teams
and players of the Negro Leagues and includes photos, soundclips from some of
the famous negro baseball league players.
John Skilton's Baseball Links
is the World Wide Web's most comprehensive collection of links to baseball
related resources, containing over 8500 unique links. Includes all of the other
sites not mentioned here.
