House Museum 'Tea and Treats' Scheduled for February 14-17 GREENEVILLE, TN -- Mrs. Samuel (Sarah) Witherspoon Doak, portrayed by Doak House interpreter Anna Jane Taylor, will serve afternoon tea in the dining room of the Doak House Museum from 2-3:30 p.m. daily Feb. 14-17. Visitors to the event will be invited to sample 19th century goods over tea while Mrs. Doak shares stories about the "modern days" of 1852. The menu will include Morning Glory cake with foole, watercress sandwiches, cheese cubes, sugar cookies, orange peel, brown sugar fudge and minted tea. The orange peel candy recipe, circa 1700s, is from the cookbook of Martha Washington, and was very popular during her era as it could be kept all year. The Morning Glory cake is a forerunner of the modern fruit cake, but made with dried rather than candied fruit. Watercress grows on the banks of Frank Creek, which runs through the Doak House Museum property. It was used in sandwiches, as garnishes, and cooked as well. Reservations, which will be taken on a first-call, first-serve basis, may be made by calling 636-7300, extension 251. Cost is $5 per person. Groups and clubs, as well as individuals, are welcome. Space is limited. |
