Tusculum College Trustees issue two honorary resolutions
GREENEVILLE -- Two special resolutions were passed by the Tusculum College Board of Trustees during its winter meeting on Feb. 9 and 10 on the Tusculum campus.
One of the resolutions honored the memory of long-time trustee and Tusculum supporter Gordon J. Chalmers, who died earlier this year.
The other honored Mitzi Williams, who retired near the end of 2000 after a long career at Tusculum College. For about a decade, Mrs. Williams was the administrative assistant to the president, working with both former president Dr. Robert Knott and current president Dr. Dolphus Henry.
The resolution honoring the memory of Gordon Chalmers noted that Chalmers "had a profound impact as a trustee, supporter, advocate for and friend of Tusculum College," and that his life "embodied the values and virtues that the College seeks to perpetuate."
Chalmers, who spent much of his distinguished professional life in both Greeneville and Knoxville, joined the Tusculum College Board of Trustees in 1971. He held many leadership positions with the board, including chairman, secretary, and treasurer. He chaired the nominating committee and the enrollment committee of the board, and was a member of the business committee.
The conference center in the Niswonger Commons on Tusculums campus was named in Chalmers' honor in 1999. Earlier, he was honored by Tusculum by being named a recipient of the college's Distinguished Service Award.
The resolution passed on Feb. 10 concluded: "In consideration of his devoted service to Tusculum College, the Board of Trustees enshrines in the records of the institution our appreciation of the life and service of Gordon Chalmers, our friend and colleague."
Also over the weekend, a large framed portrait of Chalmers was hung in the Chalmers Conference Center. The portrait was provided by Chalmers' family.
The resolution honoring Mitzi Williams cites her long association with the College and notes that during which time she became a "friend, confidant, advisor, and encourager to members of the Tusculum College family ranging from students to members of the Board of Trustees."
Part of the resolution reads: "Whereas Mitzi and her husband, Chuck, are and will always be beloved by the thousands of individuals their lives in association with Tusculum College have touched; and whereas in the year 2000 Mitzi chose to enter retirement, the members of the Board of Trustees of Tusculum College ... do hereby declare our appreciation and affection for Mitzi Williams, and thank her for her long and devoted service to Tusculum College and this Board of Trustees."
