Tusculum sites featured on local Holiday Tour

Three Tusculum College sites were part of the Nathanael Greene Museum's recent Holiday Tour, an annual fundraising effort of the museum featuring Greene County history.

On the Dec. 8-9 tour were the Doak House, Old College (Andrew Johnson Library & Museum), and the President's House. The Doak House, at left, was decorated in festive greenery for the holiday as visitors learned about the history of the Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak. The home was decorated to reflect the Christmas traditions in the 1830s which included greenery native to this area.

At the Old College, celebrating its 160th anniversary this year, the museum had on special display Godey's Lady's Books from the 1860s to show some of the Christmas fashions for that age as well as the oldest book in the Tusculum library collection, Pliny the Younger's "Natural History," printed in 1487, at left.

Christmas tree decorated with sand dollars in the entrance hall of President's House (at left) helped greet visitors to what has served as the home of Tusculum's president in almost all of the years since its construction in 1909. The sand dollars were collected by Judy Henry, wife of current President Dr. Dolph Henry.
